    http://www.costco.com/

    odd, isn't it...

click the link and notice the fine print:

Due to overwhelming demand, any orders placed after 10/08/09 will not ship until 11/16/09

    Re: the costco indicator

The overwhelming demand is at least partially explained by the $200 / 20% limited time discount.

I think it's because the Central Banks are leasing freeze dried foods to suppress the price and cause back orders

              what? I wrote partially.

Valid for orders placed September 28, 2009 through October 18, 2009. Due to overwhelming demand, any orders placed after 10/08/09 will not ship until 11/16/09.
We have no idea how many units Costco started with. Maybe they vastly underestimated how quickly word spreads on the internet about any and all sales and deals. Think of the hundreds of "deal-a-day" themed websites and all of the variations. Hundreds at least.

Or maybe Costco started out with a shitload of units and the demand is very high, signaling that many Americans are preparing for the worst. We really don't know what the shortage of supply indicates.

How's this for a wild, crazy, irresponsible guess? It strikes me that we are in the harvest season and the supply of fresh commodities for freeze drying is probably close to maximum. Add in the fact that items sold without incurring inventory carrying costs can be cheaper and this becomes a nice discount for pre-orders deal. In fact, handling the orders with drop shipping from the production plant sounds like a winner to me. The combination would easily justify free shipping and low prices. Costco's original price looks to be 33% less than the $1500+ that survivalist websites charge for rough parity, but with the discount it becomes roughly half off. A quick check of survivalist sites indicates that they can ship in a week, so supply at manufacturers is more than adequate. So, my guess is that the sale is simply in season discounts along with promotion.

Now, for the disturbing part ... Is this a scheme to attract a new demographic to Costco -- i.e. survivalists who will then buy in bulk at their new favorite outlet, or does it reflect the fact that the Costco customers now believe stocking up on freeze dried goodies makes sense? I think it is an attempt to attract new customers because the nominal price was already good enough to compete vigorously with the survivalist sources, so the discount would just increase breathless word of mouth and attract / inform new people.

So, it looks to me like the survivalist population may be increasing enough to justify the promotion and Costco intends to attract them. Also, it may indicate that the freeze dried food market is finally saturating and everybody who wants the stuff has it stocked in depth. I don't think the promotion indicates that the current "mainstream" customers are going to buy. Time will tell.

BTW... lest anyone be confused... those are not fish testicles but rolled fish meat. ( I make no guarantees what sort of fish meat it is: organs, bladder, eyeballs, etc... )
