The question is how do we set make government priorities coherent with YOUR needs and enable a free market to realize those solutions.

The old conservative rhetoric won't solve anything though it does satisfy outrage.
Sunsky, I hope you know that I truly respect you even when you're wrong. (And being a Democrat that means most of the time.:p)
In fairness the Republicans are wrong about half the time, at a minimum. I alone am right almost all of the time. ( Did I say that? Call my wife!) But you're one of the "good" Democrats because you aren't so far-left crazy that we can't have a reasonable discussion, and I believe that you truly want the best for the United States. ;)

The United States Government doesn't build aircraft carriers or interstate highways. Think Ingalls Shipbuilding or Electric Boat Company, or Northrup Grumman Newport News; and for highways think APAC or one of hundreds of regional and local engineering contractors.

As for prioritizing, well yes, we have to have broad national policy and that is set by the Federal government. But an honest view of the past forty-five years shows a collective failure of both major parties to establish and enforce necessary national goals (think energy independence) along with serious attempts to restrain federal spending.

And I believe that it is going to end with a total or near total collapse of our economy and even the republic itself. I can only hope that men such as you and I will have a large influence on what comes after the rubble.

    But I'm not optimistic.

The US won't collapse totally, Wall Street can't make money if everyone is totally broke. But then, there is BRIC, Wall Street may give up on America and move on.

But without the reserve currency, how is America going to finance the retirement of baby boomers? There may soon be no retirement afterall.

Well, Raz. You can be my Vice President when I run .

Seriously, no, government does not build aircraft carriers nor highways but it does represent that priority in our economy.

You...you, you mean you weren't serious about picking me for VP?

          I'm crushed! ;)

All of you need to return and read the full text; you will discover the trigger for that often suggested, but never yet realised "Sudden Stop" event. It is here, in plain text. No one in their right mind will have anything more to do with the US if they are not a US Citizen. Period. THAT is what the full document is aimed at.
Sadly, however, the matter has not been properly thought through. The real problem lies not in the rigour of the law, but in the lack of clarity about actual tax liability, and the resulting disproportionate effort required for monitoring and management. The enormously expansive view of what constitutes a US person, and the potential, imperialist, expansion of inheritance tax liability to cover the whole world substantially increase the risk of investing in America, and thus on the US capital market. This applies for investors, but even more so for intermediaries. While the old QI agreement put the thumbscrews on them, the intended agreement will crush them in a vice. It is becoming clear that it will be simply too dangerous to own US securities, to hold them as a custodian for third parties, or to trade them as a bank.

Re: The Real Crisis Yet To Unfold

I liked the article up to this point:

It is no wonder that the Obama administration would fight so hard to grow this nation’s health care system to megalithic proportions. In doing so they would create yet another mechanism by which to mask the transfer of government deficits behind the veil of shadow accounting.
It smacks of yet more right-wing fearmongering about the terrible fate that awaits Americans if we only allow Obama to try to move our healthcare system even slightly closer to the universal care systems provided by every other developed nation.

The US is bankrupt, and its healthcare system is FUBAR. Two separate problems. Leaving the FUBAR healthcare system in it's current state will not help our fiscal mess.

No did not mean NO. I need you for my Southern Strategy . Whatever that means of the break up of the US.

Seriously though, I no longer think that the unthinkable is unthinkable. The current trend is that the financial system has hit a shock wave event as it tried to go faster than the speed of sound. It is tumbling at high altitude and we think we are okay because we are still at 60,000 feet. Aerodynamic break-up is starting to happen and the pilots still think they are in control. We may end up strewn all over East Texas soon.

Sometimes the quotes tell us more about the person behind them; for example, you are not only a woman, but a pilot as well....

No, not true, by no means smart, but the picture is of someone's feet propped up on a chair, No?

But having ridden up the longest cable railway to walk along the ridge at her home town, and being a glider pilot does give me a small edge.

Doesn't that sound female? We're supposed to read their pretty little scattered minds.

Men don't say such things - unless they're politicians.

I knew I was lacking something. I needed a government bureaucrat to set my priorities in life. She'll know much better than me what my energies are best directed towards, and then once she's decided that for me, she'll "let" me go work in the free market to achieve them.
Sounds like you need a wife....
