As I said when I announced this strategy, there will be more difficult days ahead. The insurgency in Afghanistan didn't just happen overnight and we won't defeat it overnight. This will not be quick, nor easy. But we must never forget: This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. You can't get on Obama for a War that hasn't happened yet. Plus, war with Iran will be determined by a failure for the economy to pick up or unemployment to go down. It will be a War to defend the dollar because bailout 3 and 4 aren't affordable at these dollar prices. Obama will have very little to decide, he will be led.

We all know that the nobel peace prize is a politicized joke of an award, but this is the cherry on the bullshit sundae.

Also, my understanding is that the submission deadline was two weeks after he took office.

I've never seen an individual get so much attention for what we hope he becomes and so little attention for what he has(n't) accomplished.

I bet that's one swinging acceptance party with Jimmy Carter and Al Gore. "Kumbaya", my fellow juice drinkers says Obama in his acceptance toast. Too bad Yasser Arafat had to send his regrets from hell. How many other former peace prize winners are burning in eternal damnation one wonders?

Truthfully, I would have prefered the Olympic games for Chicago, but hey, that's just me talking.

You all can't blame Obama for the rest of the world being idiots. Some perspective. One in three Presidents have had a serious assassination attempt. One in four have been injured or killed. The gigantic balls to be the first black American president in this country is impressive on its own let alone choosing to follow the thunderous policy idiot Bush. How many of you have cojones like that?

First analytical post in this thread. Everything else was just emotional reaction from personal dogma.

Of course it was a calculated tactical move from the Nobel committee.

We also all know that it hasn't been a 'peace prize' for many decades anymore. It's just a play token on the grand chessboard.

Naturally Obama hasn't deserved an iota of this award.

But now his hands are ever so slightly more tied on options for some unforeseeable future.

My take is that O' administraion will try to downplay this (at least domestically) as much as possible.

On the other hand, the Nobel committee will try to publicize it as as possible.

Such is the nature of the beast in politics - impressions and public appraisal do matter.

My hat is off to the Nobel committee. At least they try to influence things this time, and not just give accolade later when the dust has settled and bodies have been counted.

Then again, it didn't work so much w/ Henry 'I wasn't complicit in mass murder' Kissinger. He did it anyway, before and after. No conscience, no emotion - pure rational realpolitik game theory. Gotta admire the guy for that, even though his deeds and apparent lack of moral backbone are despisable.

with so many horrible stories in the US: abandoned hourses, empty malls, food stamps, california IOUs, detroit wellfair lines, and two bloody non-ending wars in the desert and mountains, the long stretch road to ruins is ahead of all american citizens.

at this very moment, the nobel prize committee gives the god-send anti-depressant to US patriots to cheer you up. shouldn't you guys send them a bouque of flowers to return favour?

they did the right thing! in a chinese expression, this is called:"give someone wood when it snows".

I'll add my congratulations to yours, and suggest that if this helps keep the global spotlight of critical assessment [not unbridled adoration] on the White House and the new Administration, and causes them to reflect more carefully on the external [to the USA] consequences of the policies they are proposing, then perhaps the world will ultimately be better off for it.
