"...The lodge is fortified with stone walls at least a foot thick and a guard tower. There is a separate facility that resembles a jail on site...."

"The two-story stone lodge, tucked away on 407 acres in Couderay, Wisconsin, was owned by the Capone family in the 1920s. It will be auctioned Thursday on the steps of the Sawyer County Courthouse, three hours from Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to an ad in the Chicago Tribune."

      Dang -- I was expecting a tongue-in-cheek post from GRG55.

The part in the thread title about "Ready made" should have been the give away ASH. Although I highly recommend everyone build their own bunker over buying one, mine is far from finished...

On sober second thought, that ready made one sounds increasingly attractive...

I was expecting an ammo bunker looking building, but that will do in a pinch, I sure no one will notice when I move just before the end H:eek:
We are all little cockroaches running around guessing when the FED will turn OFF the Lights.

Can you imagine trying to keep a stone building warm in a Wisconsin winter? Bunker building isn't what it used to be.

Isn't a foot of stone about R-12 insulation? Then add some for interior finishing and you get as good as a 2X4 wall with fiberglass. Also, once you warm up the inside the thermal mass keeps it warm. Nobody's talking about how long it takes to warm up those walls, though :-) The real selling point is how cool it stays in the summer :-)

Best part of family shopping trips at the discount store when I was 10 in the early 60's was going down in the fallout shelter. Duck and cover.

Stone has mass but almost no R value, (less than R-1 per foot). It is an almost perfect thermal conductor. We live in the land of adobe homes, and, adobe has pretty much the same problem.

We're about a month away from starting construction on a guest house which will be in our local historic district and it has too look like the adobe houses which surround it but it will be standard stick built but with 8" walls and 2" of foam on the outside of that wall. That will provide an approximate R-38 insulation with almost no thermal bypass.

An average 2x4 stick home with fiberglass batts has an R-12 value where there are batts and an R-5 value at the 2x4 studs which lowers the overall R value by about 10%.

                    And that's just the walls...;)
