MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday.

"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.

He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."

He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future.

A new U.S. carrier battle group has been dispatched to the Gulf.

The USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006.

The U.S. is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region.

The Stennis has been in the Gulf for some time now, I would hope Russian intelligence is at the very least as good as my own. Maybe Russia is doing their part to get the oil prices as high as possible, before those oil prices head as low as possible.

The Persians are astute diplomats, how long can they delay the hunger of the mighty eagle? As for the Bear, he is in the catbird seat in every sense of the words. But something disturbs my mind, could it be that the Bear and the Eagle's long term goals may be one and the same?

What would peace in the Middle East mean for the oil price?

The international conference convened in Baghdad for March 10 represents an important first step to finding a lasting solution to the chaos of Iraq since the US invasion four years ago. But if the Middle East can summon the political will to deal with this situation will this not cause a fall in the oil price?

This might be the price that the region has to pay for a new peace settlement. Certainly current oil prices above $60-a-barrel include a war risk premium that would bring prices down if it was removed.

Economists reckon that up to $30-a-barrel of the present oil price comprises this risk premium, which has been supported by hedge fund investments in commodities. Such hot money can leave an asset class very quickly when fundamentals change.

My confusion has always stemmed from the fact it's hard to believe Iran after all this time still doesn't serve British interests in the region. Iran's talk and actions do nothing but further line the pockets of Exxon and the other sisters. Last night a rumor supposedly spikes crude up $5 that war had broken out. Qui Bono? Captured sailors. Qui Bono? Everything Iran does jacks up the price of crude.

The US Navy said yesterday it had ordered an aircraft carrier to the Gulf to replace one of two patrolling the region, as the United States winds down naval war games on Iran’s doorstep.

The Nimitz carrier strike group will sail from San Diego for the Gulf on Monday, a navy spokesman said, to replace the Dwight D Eisenhower, as tensions mount between Iran and the West over captured British troops and Iran’s nuclear programme.

The drills, which included anti-submarine, anti-surface and mine warfare drills, ended yesterday. For the first time since the Iraq invasion four years ago, two US aircraft carriers were deployed in the Gulf.

Fifth Fleet spokesman Lieutenant-Commander Charlie Brown said there were currently no plans for more. “We do not expect to have three carriers in the Gulf region ... but we cannot talk about future needs or future operations,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the US not to aggravate tensions with Iran with its naval presence in the Gulf.

From my point of view, the decision to invade Iran was made a long time ago, and it is simply a part of this admin's greater agenda. After the mid-term election, I began to think that there was a small possibility that such a conflict was going to be avoided. With the current "Hostage Crisis", I am again certain that an invasion is immenent. After reading about these unfortunate soldiers, its pretty obvious that they were sent into capture intentionally, and the situation is being played up as much as possible in the PR spin cycles of tv news. I say that the U.S. will be bombing Iran before the end of April, which is pretty much on schedule.

The motive for an invasion has mostly to do with contolling the western portion of Iran to secure the distribution of Iraqi oil via pipeline. I originally read theories about this master plan almost ten years ago, and its all going to plan (except for the fact that the U.S. can't control Iraq). That part the admin didn't expect, but I think they intend to carry forward on the assumption that they will eventually get things under control. None of it makes sense to rational observers, but, then again, we aren't dealing with a rational admin.

And I still can't figure out what they intend to do during the next election. Who do the republicans see as Bush's successor? Iraq is still going to be a quagmire by then, and they just might be bogged down in Iran as well, so who is supposed to continue the fight?

I think this whole situation is going to spin ridiculously out of control, until European nations finally decide to break ranks with the U.S. I'm not sure what it will take to persuade the E.U. that its interests no longer reside with this U.S. admin. Right now, it looks like they are playing along, because they simply don't know what else to do. But popular opinion on the continent has been sharply anti-U.S., and that is not changing. Eventually, E.U. leaders are going to have to placate their populations and take a new course. Same thing in the U.S. Eventually, democrats are going to have to get a spine and begin to show some actual resistance. Most of them appear to just want this whole mess to go away, so they can play more golf or something. But there is never going to be military victory, so something is going to have to give politically.

How much of a buildup ????? Old news, been going on long before I was floating around the crappy med and gulf in the early 90's. EU has allready caught a hint and I even think the ivy league moron and his lackies are seeing the limits of their horizon.

Now, it just isnt in the intrest of the war/oil complex to have stability anywhere, espically in the middle east. Continue the war mongering, fear factor, with tv puppets spouting their preprogrammed propaganda. Yawn


Did ya notice how quick all governments hopped all over the bird flu problem ? Ya ever think why ??? A true pandemic would wipe out all global financial markets and destroy the great corporations and truly rich individuals. Wars are man made, manufactured, controlled and profited from.
