Teachers vote to take 7.9% pay cut.

This is not a one-off thing.

See graphic at bottom of page for summary of what is happening in other states.

There is no future here. When Eric says we must be prepared to accept a lower standard of living, I was imagining the horror of millions of Americans cutting back to 1 venti late a week. I did not imagine this. It is sad.

Has anyone run across a news item detailing pay cuts taken by elected politicians who to one degree or another are responsible for so much of this bullshit?

Of course it is meaningless, but they did take a pay cut.

The budget deficit is about 1 to 2 billion out of a state budget of about 10 billion. The pension fund is underfunded by about 5 billion I think.

There are across the board cuts of about 10%. For example, the University of Hawaii had its budget cut by about 10%, I think.

We are eating our seed corn. I cannot understand why anyone would contend that our problems are over unless they simply do not know what is going on. Of course, it takes a lot of time and broadband to figure out what is happening, so I guess maybe not much can be done about that.

See the graphic in the linked to story to see what is in store for many other states down the line.

Leading by Example: Gov. Lingle orders pay cut for exec staff
By News Release :: 171 Views :: Hawaii State News, Hawaii State Politics
GOVERNOR LINGLE ORDERS TWO FURLOUGH DAYS PER MONTH FOR CABINET ADMINISTRATION

Governor, Lt. Governor, Chief of Staff, Department Directors and Deputies Lead by Example

HONOLULU — Governor Linda Lingle today issued an executive order (see attached) to furlough herself, the Lt. Governor, her chief of staff, and all executive branch directors and the deputies or assistants to the directors. The two-day furlough takes effect August 1, 2009 and continues through June 30, 2011. It is expected that the furloughs, along with the legislatively mandated pay cut, will result in more than $1.2 million in salary savings over the next two years.

The executive order affects 42 executive branch officials who are already taking a 5 percent salary reduction under Act 85 which the Governor signed into law in June. The two-day furlough, combined with the 5 percent reduction which took effect on July 1, is equivalent to an approximately 13 percent salary reduction for this fiscal year, and approximately 13.7 percent for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010.

There should not be any public employee unions nor pensions paid for by taxpayers.

Americans are too blame - you need to vote for hard-core local politicians that will dismantle public employee unions and end the pensions.

If social security is good enough for the private sector than it should be good enough for the public sector.
