  • 25 cent solution to Global Warming

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/env...te-change.html

Contraception is almost five times cheaper as a means of preventing climate change than conventional green technologies, according to research by the London School of Economics.

Good post ... I am betting that "five times" is an underestimate.

Finally, someone is looking at the root of the problem. There are many more problems the world faces, including many of the economic problems we face, which grow from the same root.

Not growing is not the same as killing, Ok?

Agreed, with respect to preventing egg fertilization. Anything after that is killing a human being, period, scientifically, whether one likes that fact or not.

The article is about "Family planning" which extends way beyond condoms.

The report, Fewer Emitter, Lower Emissions, Less Cost, concludes that family planning should be seen as one of the primary methods of emissions reduction. The UN estimates that 40 per cent of all pregnancies worldwide are unintended.

If these basic family planning needs were met, 34 gigatons (billion tonnes) of CO2 would be saved – equivalent to nearly 6 times the annual emissions of the US and almost 60 times the UK’s annual total.
Roger Martin, chairman of the Optimum Population Trust at the LSE, said: “It’s always been obviously that total emissions depend on the number of emitters as well as their individual emissions – the carbon tonnage can’t shoot down as we want, while the population keeps shooting up.”
UN data suggests that meeting unmet need for family planning would reduce unintended births by 72 per cent, reducing projected world population in 2050 by half a billion to 8.64 million.
The research is published on the day that the Government’s climate change advisers, the Climate Change Committee, warned households and industry that a planned 80 per cent reduction in emissions are likely to prove insufficient.

Flocking is so much fun..... "Birds do it. Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it. Let's do it; let's fall in love."

Besides, what good is an easy fix that the mega-corporations can't make money off of and government can't use to gain more control.? This is the United States. If you can't make a fortune off the "solution" then it must be wrong. Right?

No need to worry about such issues. Significant die-off this century is inescapable. Such is the folly and frail predicament of humanity. The "go green" movement is insufficient and too late anyway. It's an investment scam. Similar to fad diets. It's not buying that nifty Suzanne Summers belly cruncher that makes you lose weight. Putting the fork down makes you lose weight.

Humanity will never put the fork down. It's not in our nature and we need to see continuous economic growth. Nothing in nature grows exponentially - yet we silly humans think we can extract, build, consume and procreate exponentially.

Lovelock descrbies it well in his Gaia theory. He had a recent interview by the BBC. Quite interesting to watch a 90 year old tell it like it is.

                      Oprah Winfrey's charity challenge

ELEVEN of the world’s wealthiest people, including Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, met in secret a fortnight ago to discuss the future of philanthropy in light of the continued global economic crisis.
Other attendees included Oprah Winfrey, the billionaire chat show host, Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York, Ted Turner, the media mogul, and George Soros, the man who “broke the Bank of England” in 1992. Although details of the meeting are only now emerging, it is believed the group met to brainstorm how best to bolster charitable giving in spite of the recent reduction in wealth. Despite market conditions, the 11 attendees still share a combined fortune of $120bn (£76bn), based on the Forbes 2009 list of the world’s richest people. The meeting was held on May 5, at the private residence of the president of Rockefeller University on New York’s exclusive Upper East Side. It is not known if the attendees discussed working together on a charitable basis, although all present have been involved in philanthropy in some shape or form. Mr Gates has bestowed the majority of his $37bn fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, while Mr Soros last week pledged $50m to the Robin Hood Foundation. – Telegraph
