Any advantages over GLD other than the Swiss elan? http://www.reuters.com/article/etfNe...34362020090909

ETF Securities' Swiss gold shares to trade on NYSE

    Wed Sep 9, 2009 9:39am EDT

NEW YORK, Sept 9 (Reuters) - ETF Securities Ltd, an operator of commodity exchange-traded funds, said its U.S.-based Physical Swiss Gold Shares will begin trading on Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
The ETFS Physical Swiss Shares SGOL (SGOL.P) are backed by physical gold bullion held in vaults in Zurich, Switzerland. Its shares will begin trading on Wednesday on NYSE Arca, a trading platform where many other ETFs are also listed.
Exchange-traded funds issue securities backed by physical stocks of a commodity, giving investors exposure to the underlying asset prices.
The company said in a statement the product was in response to investor interest for a ETF backed by gold bullion stored in Switzerland.
UK-based ETF Securities operates a string of commodities-backed ETFs in London and Australia. It currently manages about 130 products with $13 billion in assets, the company said.
In late July, the company launched a U.S. silver trust (SIVR.P). The trust's silver bullion holdings exceeded $111 million as of last week.
In April, ETF Securities filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch the first U.S. platinum ETF, which could be a boost to the price of platinum, if it clears regulatory hurdles, analysts said. (Reporting by Frank Tang; Editing by Walter Bagley)

Would you dare invest in something physically located in a country that may soon not exist?

Gadaffi does have a point, does he not?
And he will have a whole year as UN head to cleans things up . . .
It couldn't possibly be simple vengeance over the treatment of his son, now could it?

    Libyan anti-Swiss motion rejected
    http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/news_dig...80792000&ty=nd

"A Libyan motion calling for the dismemberment of Switzerland was rejected by the United Nations about a month ago, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.
    . . .

Markwalder, who is vice-president of the House of Representatives external policies commission, had expressed concern that Libya would use its forthcoming year-long presidency of the UN General Assembly to damage Switzerland's reputation.

She said Swiss diplomacy needed to work hard to avoid a scandal at the UN meeting.

Gaddafi first mentioned the idea of dismemberment during the G8 summit in Italy in July. Switzerland "is a world mafia and not a state", he said, adding that it was "formed of an Italian community that should return to Italy, another German community that should return to Germany, and a third French community that should return to France".
    . . ."
Justice is the cornerstone of the world

Thanks for the comic relief cobben .

No matter how dire our mundane lives may seem we can always count on the UN to lift us out of the depths of despair with its always unique forms of cheap entertainment. However, in any war [diplomatic or otherwise] between the UN and the Swiss, my money is on the Swiss [in large part because nobody needs Switzerland more than the UN mandarins...can you imagine any of them voluntarily trading their Geneva expense account lifestyle for a bed in Benghazi]

In any case I have an automatic deep suspicion of anything with a UN stamp on it. The IPCC was estabilished under two UN organisations.

This would be the same UN that in 2001 decided to put Syria on the Security Council:
September 8, 2001: "Since even the foundation of the UN Syria has contributed to the basics of international legitimacy in order to enable peoples of the world achieving their legitimate aspirations towards a better world in which generations enjoy peace and security...
...Throughout years, Syria has revealed its complete commitment to the UN charter and honor of the principles of the international law, commitment to decisions released by the international organizations aiming at finding out just solutions to peoples causes away from double standard position."
On further thought, I suppose there is some logic in having one of the world's premier police states serve on the "Security" Council.

This would be the same UN that in its founding charter embraced the following:
“...to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women...”
and regularly reminds us that... "U.N. treaties, such as the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which the General Assembly passed in 1948, form the core of international standards for human rights."
The same UN that determined (for the first time by secret ballot, instead of the traditional acclamation) in 2003 that, of its then 177 member nations, Libya was the most qualified to serve as Chair of its standing Commission on Human Rights. On further thought, is there any entity more qualified and knowledgable to advise on the concept of human rights than those states that habitually abuse them?

This would be the same UN whose World Food Programme agency has this in its mission statement http://www.wfp.org/aboutwfp/mission/...&sub_section=6
"...WFP works to put hunger at the centre of the international agenda, promoting policies, strategies and operations that directly benefit the poor and hungry..."
The same UN that despite this...
"...ZANU-PF used government food stocks as a political weapon, denying supplies to some MDC [Movement for Democratic Change] supporters and promising it to other citizens in exchange for votes...In December 2005, the government agreed to allow the UN World Food Program to distribute food aid to over three million people through June 2006, and in March 2006, Zimbabwe's Millers Association warned that the country-once one of Africa's major sources of agricultural exports-had only two weeks' worth of wheat remaining. In April, the government banned international agencies from carrying out crop estimates in the country...The government's partisan disbursement of food and other material assistance...perpetuated public dependence on the ruling party...In some areas a ZANU PF card was required to obtain food and agricultural inputs." (Freedom House Country Report on Zimbabwe 2007)
...saw fit in 2006 to elect Zimbabwe to a three year term as one of the 36 members of the World Food Programme Executive Board. On further thought, who could possibly have more knowledge about the ravages of chronic hunger than a government that has become expert at starving its own people?...

the u.n. is just a talking shop, but as churchill said, jaw, jaw is better than war, war. i suppose it lets the world political establishment let off a little steam, anyway, at the margin, a little bit, maybe.

Plus, if you take into account that every single male in Switzerland has served in their military and keeps an assault rifle at home, and you can understand why even Hitler decided to drive his tanks around that country. The UN will do nothing.
