Your post not only missed the entire point of my message, your comment is offensive and shows an unnecessary and misguided lack of respect for Ms. Rice's incredible achievements, not only as a "token black female", but as a person.

Ironically, your use of the term "token black" is exactly the type of cultural anti-success mindset of which I was explaining.

Your comments have had two unintended consequences...
1] You have strengthened my point.
2] You have shown yourself to be a partisan, bigoted, mental midget.
The sad part is that you don't have the mental capacity and/or self-awareness to realize it. You'll simply believe that I'm the moron and that you really put me in my place with your anti-Bush sentiment and comment. Good for you, way to get to the depth of the argument with your Bush Sucks, Republicans Are War Mongers rhetoric.

I know I'm going to score no points for sense of cultural humor here, but these comments seem unnecessary and misogynistic. Your female acquaintances must be a good deal different in character than mine.

Re: "employment sank by over 1 million" last month

U-6 got a massive boost in June and will again next June.

How many young adults graduated from a 2 or 4 year University and attempted to enter the full-time work force?

How many are barely holding on to their retail jobs from high school, just to earn a little bit, thus keeping another younger person, a high schooler out of a job?

On the other end we've got the 55+ set. I can't help but feel bad every time I see one of these guys working in a fast-food or retail joint now, but at least they have something.

On the flip side, the majority of our work force is made-up of very hard working young men and women of hispanic heritage. This culture is an inspiring combination of energy and optimism with a work ethic and respect for authority that is admirable and desirable to any employer.
You say you are a self made man and give out jobs etc etc.

Do you provide health care to your employees at their munificent $8.50/hour?

          What about retirement benefits?

Do these low but not quite minimum wage paying jobs provide training for better opportunities? What's the typical career path for your hard working young man or woman?

If we take an example state like Minnesota - the median wage for 25 year old high school graduates is well over $20,000 a year...or well under your wages.

          http://www.higheredinfo.org/catconte...otaProfile.pdf

But maybe instead you are in South Carolina where the median income for those 25 and under and black is $15,000 and change (in 1999). Do you pay a lot of overtime?

The point of this exercise is two-fold:

          1) For incomes of $8.50 an hour with little or no prospect of advancement in the specific job/company, it is unclear whether just going straight to government welfare is a worse choice: Subsidized housing, food, health care, etc vs. not a whole lot of money with a whole lot of responsibility. Not a choice I would make, but not irrational if your local societal view is that the American Dream is white propaganda.

          2) Even for those willing to work hard, get an education, and work for $8.50 an hour on the way up, the actual societal burden is likely higher than the wages. If you don't pay health care, then your employees are basically just relying on the charity care of your local area health network should anything drastic happen to them.

Statistically this cost is low as these are young people, but it isn't zero
if that is what you and they are paying into the system. An actual commercial premium for health insurance for a 25 year old is something in the order of $2000/year standalone: http://www.usatoday.com/money/indust...s-debate_N.htm

One of them breaking a leg will either have to pay several thousand dollars out of pocket or more likely go onto the local charity rolls.

One of them having a baby - absolutely freebie.

          3) And then there's the collective societal benefit of this workforce. How many businesses do these kids support?

          Income:
          2000 hours @ $8.50/hour: $17000

          Expenses:
          Rent: $3000 ($250/month)
Social Security and Medicare taxes (FICA): $1300
          Food: $2400 ($200/month)
          Misc. crap: $1200 ($100/month)
Auto: $3000 ($250/month, amortization, gas and insurance)
          Cell phone: $1000/year
          Internet: $500/year
          Clothing: $500/year

We're at $12,900 a year already and haven't tossed in recreation, education, state income taxes, state/local government fees, health care, or any miscellaneous crap.

Now a couple of thousand bucks a year disposable income might seem like a lot to a 25 year old, but it ain't squat as you very well know.

Your business provides jobs, but who's going to provide the jobs where people can afford kids and obtain health care once they're past 35?

I blame the government and the welfare state. Of course, the government created the welfare state, so I'll just blame the government.

Haha mental midget. Funny how you call me a bigot, yet use the term "mental midget". How ironic! I hope there are no individuals on here who would be offended by that statement.

And yes, how else would you explain the debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan other than war-mongering? When an Administration was given a month's notice of 9/11 then used that to falsely connect and implicate another country in order to invade and topple their leader, what else *would* you call it?? Youre quite partisan yourself, so Id advise against calling someone that as if you are not. Also, how does my post strengthen *your* point that black people are lazy and wouldnt revolt because they are already too lazy to look for jobs because they werent raised by other successful black folks?

But I digress. This post is about Unemployment. Carry on.

As an aside, the Bureau of Labor Statistics also publishes a number from the Household survey that is comparable to the nonfarm survey (dubbed the population and payroll-adjusted Household number), and on this basis, employment sank — brace yourself — by over 1 million, which is unprecedented. This goes well with the loss of over $20 billion in credit, much more than expected. Is there any money left to be spent?

You monitor the racial makeup of the people who apply for jobs at your company?

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Unless the information is for such a legitimate purpose, pre-employment questions about race can suggest that race will be used as a basis for making selection decisions. If the information is used in the selection decision and members of particular racial groups are excluded from employment, the inquiries can constitute evidence of discrimination.

Of course, they're all US citizens, aren't they? You would never, ever,
show massive contempt for your fellow Americans by hiring anyone who is in this country illegally just to be able to keep wage and benefit levels depressed and ensure that your workforce is a a bunch of suckup neo-slaves? Never mind the possibility you might find yourself in buttslamming
prison for a bit, and your interest in said business expropriated.

That's 2 points in this thread that rjwjr has demonstrated that makes me question the integrity of his business. More than likely speculation, but still funny nonetheless.

                        Thanks, Ash, for commenting.

My comment was entirely for entertainment value. I have a terrific relationship with my wife of 26 years. We have also raised a strong, independent, productive, beautiful daughter, now 23. Contrary to your assumption, my female acquaintances are of fantastic, admirable character. I happen to like strong, intelligent, independent, interesting persons of any gender, age, or race...yourself included. Sorry that my attempt at cheap humor missed the mark.
