China's CIC wealth fund muscles up as markets recover

    "
BEIJING (Reuters) - China Investment Corp is investing as much overseas each month this year as it did in all of 2008, Lou Jiwei, the chairman of the $298 billion sovereign wealth fund, said on Saturday.

    . . .

Now that markets are recovering, CIC is constructing a broad-based portfolio, Lou told reporters on the sidelines of a forum organized by the Washington-based Brookings Institution and the Chinese Economists 50 Forum, a Beijing think-tank.

    . . .

"It will not be too bad this year. Both China and America are addressing bubbles by creating more bubbles and we're just taking advantage of that. So we can't lose," he said.

    . . .

Lou said CIC was building a broad investment portfolio that includes products designed to generate both alpha and beta; to hedge against both inflation and deflation; and to provide guaranteed returns in the event of a new crisis.

"We have to be in everything because you never know what's going to happen in this world," he said.

Words of investing wisdom from the newbie fund manager put in charge of a SWF who took the infamous 9% stake in Blackstone May 2007, and a 9.9% stake in Morgan Stanley December 2007. This guy's an investing genius. LOL

I just took out more broad-market shorts.

Didn't the last rout teach brazen hedgers that there is no such thing as hedging, at times. i.e. zerohedge

Everyone is talking about bubbles. Seems hard to make a bubble when everyone is expecting a bubble. Not the irrational exuberance that everything will go up forever and we have reached a new economic paradigm whereby economic rules no longer matter. Which has me worried thinking what will happen if there are no more bubbles when a global society is so accustomed to bubbles?

Excactly what I was thinking, when all the dumb money has bought into the Ponzi scheme, that's when it blows up.

Here we have nearly world-wide guvm'nt sponsored Ponzis, and all the dumb guvm'nt money (GSEs) seems to have bought into them.

Tell me what is different this time, other than it's guvm'nt run?

                    Well maybe so, maybe not.
