Yeah, I agree. Once little thing that goes unnoticed during the constitutional "adjustments" of the early 20th century is that Senators used to be elected by state legislature not by state popular vote. My guess if the Senators had to answer to the State house a lot of this federalism would be tamped down.

If you look up per capita tax revenue by state.The red states as per the last 4 elections paid more in federal taxes. Also I presented the isssue as a possible scenario not necessarily one I personally agreed with. It was merely to point out the divisions that exist between those of differing political ideologies and how that could possibly relate to the above mentioned scenarios. Tax revenues aside the red states control most all of the agriculture(food) and energy supplies. As for some of the above obviously bigoted commentaries in regards to some southern states,to each his own.

Yugoslavia tried this and it didn't work out so well.

Remember that in this country sensitivity towards "Federalism" was a by-product of the civil rights struggle of the 1960's. The South was solidly "blue" up to that point.

NATO troops were used in the Balkans in much the same way as Federal troops were used in the South. Both were called in to protect minority rights.
In the case of the Balkans it was Bosnian Muslims and in the American South it was African Americans.

I'm in agreement with flintlock and wildspitze...we should revert to more power and autonomy in the hands of States and less power and size at the Federal level.

Remember that in this country sensitivity towards "Federalism" was a by-product of the civil rights struggle of the 1960's. The South was solidly "blue" up to that point.

Actually, the sensitivity towards "Federalism" started with the people writing the founding documents. It wasn't till the civil war when Federalism made its true first assertion, followed by all the goodies: federal income tax, central bank, interstate highway system, etc. etc. etc.

I knew this was going to turn into a civil rights/slavery conversation as soon as I wrote my initial post. Along with the characterization of those that want the states to have rights, that supersede the federal level, as people that are pro-slaves or some variant form of inequity thereof. Such a shame, but predictable.

Populated mostly by urban minorities? I take issue with your "mostly" characterization. I'm guessing you don't work for the US Census. By a large extent, the blue that you see loses federal tax dollars while most of the red receives a net gain. The irony, of course, is that the "red states" hate redistribution, but all the while, profit from it the most.

Another interesting statistic is the list of states by GDP per capita. From the typical, racially-slurred conservative view of urban areas and "blue states" one would imagine that these states' GDP/capita would pale in comparison to the hardworking, self-reliant "red states". In fact, it could not be more opposite.

Of the top 22 highest GDP/capita states, Obama carried all but 2: Wyoming and Alaska.

Oh come on, is everything one extreme or the other????:rolleyes: You can do both without having the Federals hands into everything. How is the Federal government justified in ignoring California's laws on marijuana. Whose rights are being denied??? They want power, and are overstepping their authority every chance they get. Calling it protecting Civil rights is an insult to people who really care about civil rights.
