Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

    By Jason Kessler
    CNN
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A recent college graduate is suing her alma mater for $72,000 -- the full cost of her tuition and then some -- because she cannot find a job.
Trina Thompson, 27, of the Bronx, graduated from New York's Monroe College in April with a bachelor of business administration degree in information technology.
On July 24, she filed suit against the college in Bronx Supreme Court, alleging that Monroe's "Office of Career Advancement did not help me with a full-time job placement. I am also suing them because of the stress I have been going through."
The college responded that it offers job-search support to all its students.
In her complaint, Thompson says she seeks $70,000 in reimbursement for her tuition and $2,000 to compensate for the stress of her three-month job search.
As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record. But Monroe's career-services department has put forth insufficient effort to help her secure employment, she claims.

Talk about an entitlement complex. I'm not sure when a 2.7 GPA became something to brag about.

Product of government schools no doubt, where you get an A for effort.

or A for just showing up...

I remember hearing a few years back that high schools were stopping awarding valedictorian because it might of made other students feel "stupid"...
same with stars for achievement posters found in elementary...

this entitlement complex is what you get when kids are taught that government should guarantee us a job, living wage, vacation time etc.

The school is one of those for profit institutions. They're the type that advertise on the subway. New York City has a substantial number of public schools of higher education. They range from schools for marginal students to institutions that are pretty hard to get into. These schools would have been a better choice but she'd probably still be without a job.

If it's a for profit school then it must have performed its duties adequately. Otherwise the market would have fixed the problem and it would be out of business. Case closed. You're welcome.

There is another way to look at this:

When a school advertises itself as THE ticket to a great career, and does not deliver, why shouldn't you get a refund? How is this any different than a mortgage company promising somebody a wonderful investment and providing a loan they know you will not be able to afford? It smacks of FRAUD.

The school says we will give you X for a price 10 times reasonable, turning you into a debt slave, but does not deliver X. Many people on this site lament our education system turning out paper-pushers. How many 17 year olds do you know that can look through all the B.S. to not only find iTulip, but understand the "real world". I promise you colleges know that they are screwing over students every year.

I think this is a GREAT first step to push back. I applaud their efforts. The "system" wants to continue ripping off our younger generation. Perhaps this will slow it down.

This IS the market fixing the problem.

I was being facetious. But regardless, if it were truly fraudulent they will likely lose the lawsuit. To establish fraud the claims have to be pretty concrete though.

For example, a friend of mine brought a class action (and won) against one of these fuax-colleges that promised students that their credits would transfer. They did transfer, but only to an affiliate faux-college owned by the same people.

It is going to be extremely difficult to establish fraud based on vague promises of helping a graduate find a job. Top that off with this student's apparent entitlement attitude and lackluster credentials and it's a seriously uphill battle.

College has turned into a right-of-passage that is little more than a 4-year binge. And everyone has joined the party to try and reap a profit. Europe has 5 Universities; Ohio has 17. Credit and the notion that everyone should attend college has driven up tuition for everyone and made a college degree from a state "university" a sham.

That's correct. Pretty much every state college in Georgia was turned into a "University" . To pay so much for a mediocre education is fraud!

I have a state University degree as well( Go dogs!) , so not being a education snob.

I was not implying that it is. There are a great many top-notch state Universities. I am lamenting the fact that as more and more state "colleges" become Universities the brand is diluted by the lackies who go sporting these degrees.

I can't understand why people get so excited when they see that someone has filed what appears to be a frivilous lawsuit. Happens all the time. If the case has no merit it will get summarily dismissed 99% of the time.

If the court were to rule that she has a case, then maybe you've got a newsworthy item.
