  • Houseboat Evictions Up

There have been a number of stories about an Amercanski family in troubled times having to make do on a houseboat. Cary Grant is in one of these on TCM from time to time. Greta Garbo as well. In 2009 America, the story has been updated....

No relief for Lake Oroville boaters facing eviction

    Published Friday, Jul. 31, 2009

A Sacramento Superior Court judge has denied a California State Parks' request for a temporary restraining order that sought to prevent Bidwell Canyon Marina management from removing its equipment and evicting about 800 boat owners on Lake Oroville.

State Parks is not requiring owners to remove their boats from the lake, said Robert Foster, superintendent of the Northern Buttes District for California State Parks.

But Frank Moothart, who built the marina 40 years ago and has managed it through FunTime FullTime, said he learned in February that his lease was not being extended by State Parks. On June 26, he told the boat owners to have their vessels off the lake by Saturday (which has since been changed to Monday).

The state and Moothart have failed to negotiate a settlement, both sides acknowledge.

On Wednesday, Judge Loren McMaster denied State Parks' request for a temporary restraining order because "the court believed State Parks and boat owners had the ability to seek damages later" if the court determines FunTime breached its contract.

I live about a mile from a major recreational lake here in GA( Lake Lanier). I know quite a few people who live full time on their houseboats. Some possibly out of necessity? I'm not talking the luxury type either. But I'd think slip fees would be high.
