Commodity Shortage next year? Sounds like prices will be going up, but that is a shortage not inflation right?

“Aug. 6 (Bloomberg) — A commodity shortage is likely next year as output of metals and agricultural products potentially rises too slowly to match revived demand, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said.”

Ok, here's another business idea, (I occasionally give these troublesome ideas away because they would get me in trouble at home). This one will get you on every MSM channel from FOX to ABC.

Go grab the web site: eatyourpet.com.

Then make very cool, logical arguments on the site about why eating domestic animals makes complete sense in today's environment. Be sure to point out that dogs are not half as cute as cows.
When the Today Show invites you on, have little buster prepared with teriyaki and consume him on-air. A before and after picture will be a nice touch. Be sure to point out that poodles are a delicacy.

        A MODEST PROPOSAL
FOR PREVENTING THE CHILDREN OF POOR PEOPLE IN IRELAND FROM BEING A BURDEN TO THEIR PARENTS OR COUNTRY, AND FOR MAKING THEM BENEFICIAL TO THE PUBLIC
IT IS a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants: who as they grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.

        ....

I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.
I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.

          Re: Inflation? What inflation?

The regular dollar items last month at the local supermarket are still there but are now priced 4/$5. This confirms EJ's picture earlier in this thread. Same items as last month, new prices. Sad thing is the items are still a deal compared to prices other places ... so this measure of prices just rose by 25%. Glad I stocked up on some items before they raised them.

Basic relatively non-perishable food items are probably the best investment right now. Pasta is good for a couple of years or more, canned goods sometimes ditto - if you can get them freshly canned, dry beans, rice, popcorn, etc, are good. I am not a doomer, but I am also not stupid. -- As I raid my stash of food I am amazed at the replacement costs for some items. Beans were $1, now $1.69 a pound, for example.

I only bought stuff I would eat regularly so I am riding on the leading edge of price increases but it appears I should increase my stock because it pays big dividends. I bought pasta on sale today, so will have a lot of it on hand for the next two or three years.

Produce seems expensive this summer, I hope to get some bargains a bit later and dry the stuff to keep it for next year. Next year my garden will contribute, too, but had too many things to do this year, and the climate stayed too cool here to grow much of anything.

If this inflation keeps up, I will probably invoke other (too doomer for me today, maybe not tomorrow) storage technologies, like filling storage containers with dry nitrogen or cheaper (CO2 -- put a piece of dry ice in the bucket and wait a few minutes before sealing), etc.

            Re: Inflation? What inflation?

I am not the best at shorter term perishable items and opted to split the food 6-months Mountain House freezed dried food and the remaining 3-6 months food I regularly eat (shorter shelf life). I keep rotating the items we regularly use. The Mountain House has a proposed shelf life of 25 years in the right conditions. I chose this because it tastes good and is a good inflation hedge. Let's face it... food isn't going to be cheaper in 25 years, and if you lose your job, or inflation does hit it makes sense to have the stuff on hand. Even with my market timing skills, I think 25 years gives me enough room to hit the broad side of the barn. The investment doesn't come close to what I've lost in paper assets and these having _ _ _ t makes sense.

Brace yourself: Beer prices are going up

"We plan on taking price increases on a majority of volume and in a majority of markets this fall," Anheuser-Busch InBev said in a statement. "The increase helps cover some input costs."

The U.S.-Belgian brewer said prices will go up "across different price tiers," including its high and low-end brands.
