She reports the the prices of many things appear to be stable, but the sizes of items seems to be decreasing. Pasta which used to come in 16oz bags now comes in 12oz. Soap sizes decreased from 13oz to 10oz, and anything that is petroleum based is coming in smaller sizes.

Maybe this is what they mean by deflation.
I look at this as inflation. The per oz. price has increased.

Wild, I am curious, what are those?

Is this a fast food chain? If so, I do not believe the horses made it through the snow and into Canada.

You have to eat the dog. Not bad with enough bar-b-que sauce. Damn, that stuff is going up in cost but hedonically, you'll be fine. When you eat the dog you don't have to feed the dog. It's better than going vegetarian.

Ok, I hope some iTuliper can make a buck with their "Eat the dog" tee shirt. But as a company, we succeed in part by avoiding marketing. Marketing is how you pull in the last buyers. I hope we'll continue to work hard enough to gain entry into new markets as we begin to saturate our our original market. We're just now starting these conversations. It's not easy growing up but I hope we stay focused on our customers. Without them, we're nothing.

Things are definitely heading into depression territory around here. Not long ago Jeff was advocating "Eat the Rich", which was followed by a London protest featuring "Eat the Bankers" posters...now we've spiraled down to dogmeat...:p

A 35 lb bag of dog food 3 years ago: $35, often $30 on sale.

                Yesterday: $52.99!

                Same brand, type, etc.

                Ouch!

                    Silly me!

Wait, it's not inflation if I trade down to feeding my dog dirt right? Substitution!

According to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce "the cost of pet food has risen by 11.2% compared with last June."

In my household there are a few animals and we've noted that the price for certain foods jumped all at once within the last couple of months. For example, all of the canned foods jumped 15-20 cents a piece. We're going to buy a grinder and introduce homemade food. It's less expensive and will be better for them.

As far as marketing campaigns go, this character is pretty funny:

Yes, it is. Well, those cows are the size of schnauzers afterall.

Brilliant idea no? Stuff them up with more cheap bread and less meat, charge about the same!

Here's another commerical (this time, it's more bread and less chicken):

Correct. But in this case I think the official BLS-sanctioned sequence is feeding it the neighbours cat this week...then you move down to dirt next week...

I know we're all having a lot of fun with this idea but this could easily become an underground trend. Look for the story, "Local animal shelters welcome high adoption rates."

Little rover might start looking mighty tasty when beef is $10 a lb. and the bread winner is still looking for a real job. If times get tough, protein is protein. The cat? Tastes just like chicken. PITA? That's the bread you can afford not the people tweaking your conscience.

Ok, here's another business idea, (I occasionally give these troublesome ideas away because they would get me in trouble at home). This one will get you on every MSM channel from FOX to ABC.

Go grab the web site: eatyourpet.com.

Then make very cool, logical arguments on the site about why eating domestic animals makes complete sense in today's environment. Be sure to point out that dogs are not half as cute as cows.
When the Today Show invites you on, have little buster prepared with teriyaki and consume him on-air. A before and after picture will be a nice touch. Be sure to point out that poodles are a delicacy.

You'll know you've won when Obama is telling the girls that the whole search for the right White House dog was like looking for a great restaurant.

Perhaps rat population surveys in the neighborhood of popular resaurants as a leading economic signal?
