Just bought a case ( 24 count,12 oz. aluminum cans) of Coke for 4 bucks. But the sell price for the empties is going up!

I see the acetylene tanks in the window. They are getting ready to torch the place to reduce inventory. The upward trend in price in a desperate attempt to maintain cash flow if anything.

Rising Costs Force $1 Store Into $1.25 Store
Owner Says Rising Prices Shinking Profits

              POSTED: 5:02 pm EDT April 24, 2008
              UPDATED: 6:32 pm EDT April 24, 2008

EAST LYME, Conn. -- Call it a sign of the times -- dollar stores have become the latest victims of a struggling economy.

A dollar store in East Lyme was recently forced to become a $1.25 store.

For seven years, Neil Hoelck, has been able to keep the price of most things at Dollar Express at $1. He said that he has been fighting a losing battle.

"I thought about doing it months ago," he said.

The Dollar Express sells anything from gum to goggles, but prices have been creeping up to the point where there wasn't enough profit.

"Costs are going through the roof, I had to pass it on to the consumer," he said.

While Hoelck said that some things in the store will still be $1 or two for $1, most everything will sell for $1.25.

Customer Michael Karamargin, of Niantic, said that he doesn't mind the price increase.

"I'm surprised it took him so long to do it," he said.

Around the same time, another Canadian chain called Dollarama announced 3 new price levels on top of the offerings for $1.00. $1.25, $1.50 and $2.00

Costs are going up ... not demand. He will be out-of-business in six-months.

It's no problem then. These aren't real Dollars...just Loonies. Good thing too; for a minute there I thought we might be talking about some real inflation or something...

Ask him what's been happening with the price of dog food for his pooch over the last couple of years.

See if he has been able to hedonically deflate it...or maybe he's substituting to help keep the CPI down.
