So what else is new?

"In 1756 the farmer representatives in the parliament demanded prohibition of coffee and got that law passed. As usual with prohibition this did not stop the consumption entirely - secret clubs were established and the coffee beans were smuggled into the country until the prohibition ended in 1769.
Since coffee was very expensive the import at times had a significant impact on the national trade balance and coffee was prohibited for periods of time. In Sweden prohibition was implemented in 3 periods for this reason: 1794-96, 1799-1802 and 1817-22.
Special "coffee police" chased offenders who were heavily fined or even flogged. "

As a nation we're using finished motor gasoline at 2004 levels:

and our usage of total Petroleum products (jet fuel, fuel oil, propane and gasoline) is at 1997 levels:

and neither of these are adjusted for changes in the population, I'm just quoting straight totals from the tables. I think the latter will jump up to 1999 levels during the winter time.

Ahhh, Grasshopper. But then why is the price not at those levels?
