  • California Caves In...Offshore Drilling to Recommence

Ah, that bastion of environmental consciousness out on the Left Coast, California, has caved in and approved an offshore drilling lease...sold themselves down the road for a measly $1.5 million in new buses and a land grant not quite double the size of Neverland Ranch...

Not quite deserving of "hell freezes over" status, but perhaps a foreshadowing of what is to come? What happened to hydrocarbon related climate change concerns? How about that Hydrogen Highway? Or the California Solar Initiative?

Don't tell me a little financial problem is going to cause California to revert to exploiting the dreaded hydrocarbon in a desperate attempt to save itself...:p. Will they use whatever they find themselves? Or peddle it to unsuspecting Nebraskans, thus maintaining the fiction of their green credentials? Could it be they just want to do their part to combat Peak Cheap Oil? Will an offshore drilling rig become the new State emblem in the future?

    Just askin'...
California's Senate Approves First Offshore Oil Lease Since 1969

California's senate voted on Friday to approve the first new offshore oil drilling lease since 1969. However, state officials underscore that California's policy on offshore drilling has not changed and that the proposal is a one-time exemption to the state's otherwise long-term moratorium on new leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Passed in the state senate by a 21-18 vote, the bill is one of 30 that will be considered as a means to boost revenues and help close the state's $26 billion deficit.

Championed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bill will allow Plains Exploration & Production, a Houston-based independent oil and natural gas producer, to access oil in state waters using slant drilling in a project known as Tranquillon Ridge.

As part of an agreement with environmentalists who support the measure, the producer has agreed to shut down four oil platforms and two onshore processing facilities in Santa Barbara by 2024. Additionally, PXP will give $1.5 million to the county for low-carbon bus technology, as well as donate 4,000 acres of land for public use.

The Tranquillon Ridge project is expected to garner an estimated $1.8 billion in royalties over the span of 15 years.

PXP will pay $100 million to the state before the project commences.

Oxy Moves Fast, Keeps Mum on Oil Discovery

As new details emerged Thursday about Occidental Petroleum Corp.'s discovery of a large new oil field in Kern, local oilmen voiced optimism that the find could stimulate local drilling work -- including among independents hoping to strike it rich.

Oil producers anxious to learn the field's location still had little to go on, though a spokesman for Chevron, indicated late Thursday that it's in western Kern County. Chevron owns a 20 percent stake in the find.

Earlier in the day, Los Angeles-based Oxy suggested that it plans to move quickly to tap the field, drilling an additional 17 wells (costing roughly $4 million apiece) this year. It said in a morning conference call that "lifting" the site's oil and gas reserves will cost the company "significantly less" than $10 a barrel -- a price considered very low in the industry.

Oxy's oil and gas production at the site more than doubled between the first and second quarters of this year to surpass the equivalent of 17,000 barrels of oil a day, company executives said in the conference call.

Oxy's discovery is believed to be the largest in California in more than 35 years. It is expected to provide jobs for oil workers at many levels. The industry estimates that every well drilled supports 70 jobs.

County Assessor Jim Fitch said the find could also generate millions of dollars a year in new property tax revenues for Kern, though he added county officials have a lot to learn about the property's potential before a value can be set...

I remember reading Peter Schiff's second book last year and being surprised at his prediction that things will get so bad in the US, that we will become an oil exporting country again.

The US populance would become so broke and so desperate/starved for foreign exchange/foreign capital that we could not afford our own oil but sell it overseas.

maybe this is starting to happen

Schiff has been correct on a lot of other things

As a nation we're using finished motor gasoline at 2004 levels:

        http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/wgfupus2W.htm

and our usage of total Petroleum products (jet fuel, fuel oil, propane and gasoline) is at 1997 levels:

        http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/wrpupus2w.htm

and neither of these are adjusted for changes in the population, I'm just quoting straight totals from the tables. I think the latter will jump up to 1999 levels during the winter time.

According to Automotive News [as reported on MSN] overall vehicle sales in the USA in June were down 35.1 percent from last year. Despite this Mega, you'll be disappointed to hear that the No. 1 selling vehicle continues to be the Ford F150 truck series and No. 3 is the Chevy Silverado [sandwiching the Toyota Camry in the trifecta]. Old habits die hard...

So Mike what this means is they are still buying 'em, but don't appear to be driving them as much.

The fact that pickups are amazingly practical vehicles has a lot to do with this. You can pack a family in one and haul a load of stuff in the back at the same time. I know more than one family where that is their only vehicle. Dad uses it for work during the day and the family uses it at night. And fuel mileage of some pickups is approaching the same as quite a few luxury cars or smaller crossover SUVs. Still no economy vehicle but not always the gas hogs they are portrayed to be.

But when gas goes back up to $4 gallon this will all change ...... again.

                    Not so . . . .
Each of the back seats of the Prius can fold down independently providing a 6ft storage length. That's where we keep our guns.

Not as handy as handy as a gun rack, I'll granted you. But you can still grab your favorite firearm to pop a deer alongside the road, or shoot out the tires of a pesky Yankee who gives you the finger because you won't let him pass.;)

I stand corrected...which just goes to show how ingenious those self-sufficient farmers in Tennessee can be!

                          Evidently not:

"The portions of the package that did not survive included a controversial proposal for the first new offshore oil drilling in four decades and another to borrow gasoline tax revenue that belongs to local governments. The potential raid of local funds almost scuttled the entire budget deal early Friday."
