    Not quite enough financial pain...not yet...
    Assembly Votes Down Governor’s Offshore Oil Drilling Proposal

    Assemblyman Pedro Nava, D-Santa Barbara, led the charge in fighting the plan, which would have allowed the first new drilling lease in state waters since the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill...

    ...“The governor tried to set up a sham committee where he controlled two of the three votes, guaranteeing him the result he wanted,” Nava said. “Rejecting his scheme means the California coast is not for sale, and it tells the federal government that California remains steadfast in our opposition to offshore drilling.”...

    ...but we would still appreciate if the rest of the country would bail us out please...:rolleyes:

      "
      • evil, Evil, EVIL;
      • The subject of graphic health warnings
      • Users of it to be shunned as social lepers and called bad names [traitors?];
      • Continues to be a legal substance in spite of everything;
      • Because governments will be as addicted to the tax revenues as the users are to the substance itself... "
      So what else is new?

      "In 1756 the farmer representatives in the parliament demanded prohibition of coffee and got that law passed. As usual with prohibition this did not stop the consumption entirely - secret clubs were established and the coffee beans were smuggled into the country until the prohibition ended in 1769.
      Since coffee was very expensive the import at times had a significant impact on the national trade balance and coffee was prohibited for periods of time. In Sweden prohibition was implemented in 3 periods for this reason: 1794-96, 1799-1802 and 1817-22.
      Special "coffee police" chased offenders who were heavily fined or even flogged. "

        and neither of these are adjusted for changes in the population, I'm just quoting straight totals from the tables. I think the latter will jump up to 1999 levels during the winter time.
        Ahhh, Grasshopper. But then why is the price not at those levels?
