  • A Jolt for the Volt...

...better described as "More utterly stupid policy from the usual idiot suspects"

So what's wrong with this picture anyway?

    Short list:
    • This policy benefits the already well off. The working poor, large numbers of whom pay tax because of Canada's ridiculously low threshold at which income taxes become payable, get it in the ear once again. Which of them can ever afford a $40,000 car? Even one that is subsidized.
    • I use _______ [fill in as applicable: a bus, the LRT, the subway, a bicycle, a skateboard, a pair of Nikes...] to get to work. Where's my $10,000 subsidy?
    • An electric car subsidy brought to you by the province that squandered a legacy of the abundant, inexpensive electricity through a botched "privatization" that would have done Calfornia proud: Deregulation was supposed to improve things, but that was a crock
...A Sun colleague has tried to sidestep rising costs by shutting down everything except her refrigerator, sump pump and motion detector light when she leaves for work. She uses so little electricity, her bill should be minuscule and it is - one recent bill was for $21 worth of power. But the total amount owing was $56.30. "Don't use my name," she begs, "as I have no doubt one of those overpaid pukes will start charging me for lack of usage."...

...Another Sun reader noticed something strange on his bill - 100 extra kWhs over and above his actual usage for that month. "I was told that every household is charged an additional amount each month, depending on individual consumption, for something called line loss," says Robert Marshall, of Simcoe. "This apparently is the amount of power lost along the line from the point of generation to my home.

"On top of a hydro bill that is now three times higher than what it was before privatization, I have to pay for their inefficiencies too? What a ripoff."...
So what are they going to do? Subsidize the ongoing recharge costs for the already well off too? Wouldn't surprise me...

    CBC News

Electric cars will become part of the Ontario government's fleet and consumers will get up to $10,000 in rebates to buy one of the experimental vehicles, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday...

...General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt is expected to hit the roads next year, but will cost as much as $40,000.

"Electric vehicles are the way to go in Ontario," McGuinty said in a statement released Wednesday morning. "This plan helps get more people behind the wheel of a green vehicle to create jobs, reduce smog and equip Ontario for the 21st century."...

Awesome, I feel much better now that I can buy a $40K car for $30K*, despite the fact that a 2-year used car goes for $5K...

    * after gvt rebate of course.
