State governments and brick-and-mortar retailers have spent years trying to pave the way for collection of sales tax on Internet and catalog purchases.
With most state budgets now sinking deep into the red, and many retailers suffering from slowed sales, there is new urgency to those efforts.
The urgency is so great that congressional action might even be in the offing. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., is expected to introduce legislation later this session to allow collection of taxes on remote sales, including from the Internet and catalogs.
Meanwhile, several states have passed laws requiring Internet sellers to collect taxes where they have "affiliates" that are directing traffic to their sites.
