Council to vote on firefighters' plan plan

A new retirement plan for Vacaville firefighters goes before the City Council on Tuesday for a final vote.
If the second reading of the ordinance is approved, the city will amend its contract with the firefighters' union by adding a "3 percent at 50" formula to the California Public Employees' Retirement System plan on or before Nov. 1.
It will mean that a firefighter who retires at age 50 would be eligible for a pension equal to 3 percent of his or her pay, times the number of years worked for the city. The change marks an increase from the current city contract, which gives firefighters and managers 2 percent at age 50.
In a relatively quiet decision during the June 9 meeting, council members voted 4-0 in favor of the amendment. Vice Mayor Curtis Hunt was absent from that meeting.
"This has been a long time coming," said Councilwoman Pauline Clancy. "It brings me a great deal of pleasure to approve this."
Before the vote, city staff explained that city police unions already have a 3 percent at 50 clause in their contract, an item negotiated with those unions in 2006. That year, the police unions did not receive a base pay hike.
Vacaville is a 100,000 pop. town in the SF Bay Area's Solano County that has consistently been in the top ten highest foreclosure counties in the country, as well as home to bankrupt Vallejo. Apparently that has had little affect on Vacaville's budget planners.
