For the love of Pete, how do you magage in the winter?

I would never be able to live somewhere that far north. Some place tropical, warm and sunny is my kind of place. One in particular comes to mind.

I had thought about moving to Ft. Smith, NWT because I reasoned that life must get easier the further north you go in Canada. But after one night in Ft. Smith, I found-out that I was wrong. My reasoning was totally laughable and simple-minded.

I was in Ft. Smith in March, and it was darn cold; but winter would have been unbearable.

But the cold in Ft. Smith would have been the least of my problems there. Staying alive and dodging chairs and fists would have been more of a nightly concern.

my south african relatives in Uk are shocked at how messed up the youth are there. I think it comes from an arrogance still in the poms but having nothing to back it up, very frustrating for the little limeys. Being South African my relatives wish they or someone could knock the shit out of them and hopefully register some sense, ideally I don't agree with violence but they may be onto something once things have gotten out of hand.

The point about rampant crime coming from drugs and drug dealing gets at the heart of the matter. Why not legalize the crap? How bad could it get, if you could be illicite drugs, from reputable, regulated manufactorers? I mean, 90 percent of all this violent crime and the means for carrying out are provided by the illegal drug biz.

Legalize it, regulate it and if you must tax it, but don't make it illegal. I predict if drugs were made legal, violent crime would die out overnight, and criminals could go back to punching each other out and using zip guns.

sounds like drugs are the CIA's biggest earner though. The biggest problem is South africa is poverty, wealth polarisation actually, not drugs.

I've always figured it has more to do with other factors also. Culture, poverty, etc all play into this. What also plays into it is the quality of the criminal justice system. Is there law and order? Or do people feel forced to take care of it themselves. Some cultures are simply not into all the violence. Others glorify it.

As far as gun violence goes, there are two separate issues. There's Citizen vs Citizen violence and then there is STATE vs Citizen violence. While bloody and horrible, civilian vs civilian violence pales in comparison to that which states have inflicted on their people throughout history. In my opinion, that really is the value of the citizenry owning guns. The brutal dictators have a tougher time of it. The trade off of that freedom is more violence unfortunately. The US really could do a better job of things without substantially reducing the 2nd amendment rights. Like putting felons caught with guns under the jail.

There is a truth in what you say. However, as a counter-example, Saddam ruled Iraq with an iron fist for thirty years and there's hardly a country on earth where the citizenry is as well armed as it is in Iraq (this was the case even before the invasion in 2003).
