This is like comparing apples with oranges. Ask the all the south africans in the UK where they feel safer. Not saying UK isn't violent but how violence is reported in UK and South Africa cannot be directly compared. Everyone in south africa has horrible experiences, something happened to them their family or friends or seen someone get killed in front of them. I know a guy who's whole family was wiped out, my mate went for a holiday a couple of months ago to SA and got stabbed. These stats are clearly bullshit.

The latest homicide rates I could find on web per 100,000:
          US 5.8
          UK 2.3
We're still the real bad boys.

Not just homicide, overall violent crime rate.
But at least they're 'celebrating diversity'

No wonder the BNP is growing.

Mike, people are people. You're just closer to some than others. Familiarity, contempt - that kind of thing.

                We're #1, We're #1, We're#1.........!

Actually we are no where near #1 here in the States despite our reputation. Still way too high and should be an embarrassment to our entire nation.

                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_rate

Rio De Janeiro's murder homicide rate is 62 per 100,000!!. 80 homicides a day in Brazil!. This despite fairly strict gun laws. I think they limit pistols to .38cal and rifles and carbines to only ones that fire pistol type ammo. The gangs find a way to buy the good stuff. And are free to wreak havoc on a mostly unarmed society. I never realized until watching the movie "City of God" that they basically have a war zone down there and have for years. Nuts.

I've always been fascinated by the Gun v Anti-Gun debates in the West, especially America. Actually guns are a red herring. South Africa has loads of guns and loads of crime. Buying guns in South Africa is quite easy. And murder is rampant. At the opposite end of the spectrum, gun ownership is also quite common in Switzerland but it has very little violent crime. In Japan, its almost impossible to own guns but there is almost no violent crime.

There are loads of other factors that play a part in crime - demographics, social and family breakdown, ethnicity and race, the state of the criminal justice system etc etc. Few people ever acknowledge all the facts. Arthur Hu has some interesting statistics on this.

Speaking of Britain personally, what struck me about Britain was that a lot of violent crime was not related to drug gangs fighting or economic interest - there is a lot of wanton vandalism in Britain which is not to be found in almost any other country that I know of. It is not uncommon in Britain for underclass youth to smash things up for no apparent reason (even when they are NOT drunk). It is something that is peculiar to Britain (particularly England) that I've never understood.

Spend a few nights at Fort Smith, North-west Territories, and you will behold more violent crime than anyone could imagine. The fun really begins after midnight when chairs get thrown and windows get smashed in the hotel there.

For the love of Pete, how do you magage in the winter?

I would never be able to live somewhere that far north. Some place tropical, warm and sunny is my kind of place. One in particular comes to mind.

Best looking women? Quite a few contenders for that - Ukraine and Venezuela get my vote. ;)

Agree 100% on the women. I almost commented on that in my earlier post. Even the Favela(ghetto) girls are hot.

Ukraine comes in a close second. Totally different type though.

I've always figured it has more to do with other factors also. Culture, poverty, etc all play into this. What also plays into it is the quality of the criminal justice system. Is there law and order? Or do people feel forced to take care of it themselves. Some cultures are simply not into all the violence. Others glorify it.

As far as gun violence goes, there are two separate issues. There's Citizen vs Citizen violence and then there is STATE vs Citizen violence. While bloody and horrible, civilian vs civilian violence pales in comparison to that which states have inflicted on their people throughout history. In my opinion, that really is the value of the citizenry owning guns. The brutal dictators have a tougher time of it. The trade off of that freedom is more violence unfortunately. The US really could do a better job of things without substantially reducing the 2nd amendment rights. Like putting felons caught with guns under the jail.
