  • Senator Chuck Schumer wants to use biometrics to identify every over-the-counter employee in the USA

Reading this sent a wave of palpable fear over me for a couple of moments. Step by step.....

The last big new law towards the same end was the REAL ID act which completed the transformation of driver's licenses into national identification cards.

Don't be fooled though, we've as a nation been transitioning towards this since the advent of the social security number.

    Senator Schumer:

Third, we must recognize that illegal immigration will never seriously be stifled unless and until we end the job magnet currently engendered by the seriously flawed I-9 regime. As we speak, any individual who steals a social security number and has access to a credible fake ID can get a job in the United States.

The current system creates havoc for both employers and employees. No one has any certainty.

Employers who accept all credible documents in good faith are not guaranteed that they will never be targeted by ICE for turning a blind-eye toward illegal immigrants in their workplace.

And employers who question suspicious documents face potential lawsuits from U.S. Citizen employees who can rightly claim that they were wrongfully profiled as illegal immigrants.

The E-Verify system, as presently constituted, cannot completely solve this problem. In fact, all that is necessary to obtain employment using E-Verify is to uncover a U.S. citizen’s social security number and to produce a credible fake ID with that U.S. citizen’s name and address.

Only by creating a biometric-based federal employment verification system will both employers and employees have the peace of mind that all employment relationships are both lawful and proper. This system will be our most important asset in dramatically reducing the number of illegal aliens that are able to live and work in the United States.

There are many proposals for practical and effective biometric-based employment verification systems, and the immigration subcommittee will be vetting each of these proposals during its upcoming hearing in July.

Just took a quick weekend airplane trip. The secret police, aka TSA took away my shaving cream (they had identified a "humongous arrousal canister") my small travel size shaving cream. Anyway, how strange this was when I had in the same bag a wine corkscrew - metal with sharp point - no problem or mention of that.

That is how these things are always sold to the public.

You can't take shaving cream on an airplane, but we're winning the war on terror?

If you have done nothing wrong there is nothing to fear about this great new legislation.

                Right?

I am sure they will keep it in a safe place and uphold all privacy laws. So all law abiding citizens are punished for the actions of a few decivers. I fully expect that the biometric registration will have a fee attached. So if there are 100,000,000 (just using round numbers) workers at $30 a pop that is $3,000,000,000 dollars for Schumer and his illustrious collegues to spend. Then all they have to do is make a annual verification fee of $10 and they have a new income stream to pay interest on $100,000,000,000 of US Bonds @ 10% interest. Someone please check to see if Orwell is still in his grave. I think he has been writing the news lately.

Supposedly Senator McCain is a co-big backer of this proposal this, but I can't find good confirmation on that.

                    ***

Q Can I follow up on that? Does the President agree with Senator Schumer's suggestion that in order to make immigration reform work, all Americans may need some kind of biometric ID card, all American workers -- fingerprint, retinal scan, something like that?

MR. GIBBS: I have not seen the specific things that Senator Schumer has laid out. I don't have anything on that aspect of the legislation or his idea, because I don't think at this point there is a bill yet to -- that's moving through Congress. I don't have anything.

Q So you wouldn't weigh in on the President's thoughts about something like that?

MR. GIBBS: I'd have to talk to him about that.

This is awesome. Remember kids, never let a crisis go to waste. In this case, illegal immigration is used as an excuse to seize power.

Of course, if we didn't subsidize illegal immigrants with free education, welfare, food stamps, etc., illegal immigration would be a very minor problem.

C'mon people, get real. Everybody with even a passing familiarity with Charles Schumer knows what the deal is here. Schumer supports "comprehensive immigration reform", a euphemism for amnesty, meaning that the millions of people who entered the country illegal will be allowed to stay as naturalized citizens (to all of you who played by the rules: suckers!). In return, Schumer is proposing a scheme to ensure that everyone who is still here AFTER the amnesty will have to demonstrate that he/she is REALLY an American. Schumer knows very well that this two-step will first provide the widespread legalization of millions of future Democrats, and then the tough stuff will be applied ... later ... and is of course subject to years of lawsuits and so forth. (Gee, I wonder how Sotomayer will vote on that one...)

For those of you who -perhaps for good reasons- want to keep attracting millions of non-citizens, providing them with free health benefits, and indeed giving their children U.S. passports (and access to welfare payments, food stamps, housing and educational subsidies, and so forth) then you should be supporting the Schumer plan. The enforcement stuff is crap, of course, just as it has always been.

The problem has been correctly identified but the finger is pointed in the wrong direction.

Fingers always point at the "liberals" that think these folks should have humane living conditions and not be treated like animals.

The real question is, why are they here in the first place? They are here because large corporations, such as agribusiness, employ them! Take away the jobs, and 90% of the illegal problem will go away, immediately. Of course, those employers will scream bloody hell that labor prices are higher for less work, and that makes food and whatnot more expensive.

But you can't have it both ways folks. To dangle the carrot in front of people (jobs), and then treat them like dogs (or rats) because they take the bait (crossing the border for jobs), is inhuman.

So take the carrot away, but stop pointing fingers at people who think other people should be treated better than sewer rats. It won't solve the problem.

(I am by no means pro-illegal immigrant, in case it isn't clear from the above).

As to the original subject, this ID thing is scary. But the question is how else to enforce this so the large corporations (and small) stop hiring these folks? I don't know the answer to that.

You are correct about why illegal aliens are here. But is it a corporation's job to police our borders, or the government's? Blaming "agribusiness" is probably correct but at what point did they become responsible for border security? Don't let the politicians duck this responsibility by blaming their corporate handlers. I believe in holding politicians personally responsible for this, as they are the ones we elected, not the corporations. The fact they are corrupt and easily bought by big business doesn't let them off the hook. Its like the convict who bribes a guard into letting him escape. Do you blame the convict or the guard? The guard is the responsible party. The convict is just acting in a manner that comes naturally to his profession.

I don't blame the Illegal aliens. I don't completely blame the people who hire them. I blame the individuals who are elected and accept government pay to uphold and protect the best interests of the US and then sell out for a vote or money or whatever. The wink and nod system of enforcing the immigration laws has turned the whole legal system into a joke. You don't need a ID law to enforce this stuff. If they seriously wanted to enforce the laws it could be easily done. Lock up anyone who hires them and it would stop overnight. Its silly to pretend this is some sort of complicated issue requiring massive ID programs and so forth. Its about money and votes and power.
