I never heard of it called survivalism. I've always heard it referred to as homesteading. I know my husband and I are trying to get as self sufficient as possible that way we don't have to worry about food or energy costs going up. Plus, pancakes made from home ground wheat are yummy and they only take a minute longer to make.

also, I'm going to Vermont, for a visit, where my cousin is marrying this weekend and they have decided to live "off grid" I'm not sure what to make of it but will be interested to watch.

Do you think that's why people never chose to live in the desert before the age of oil? Like Las Vegas, Phoenix is emblematic of 20th Century American excess. It will suffer over the next 50 years as cheap energy goes away and it becomes "kind of hard to get by in the desert".

You're starting to see more water issues out west too. I would think that would be a bigger concern that the energy issues. At least you can use solar power out West. It's a bit harder to get water.

Same with places like Florida. Hurricanes, Heat, snakes and bugs.
