The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story

The total number of cargo containers shipped through the Port of Long Beach declined 20.7 percent in May, compared with the same month a year ago. However, imports and exports grew for a third straight month, albeit at levels much below those for the same period a year ago.

Port shipping terminals moved 419,555 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) in May. Compared to May 2008, imported containers dropped 22 percent to 267,381 TEUs, and containers bound for export were down 23.8 percent to 158,798 TEUs. Empty containers, most of which are sent overseas to be refilled with products, were down 12.6 percent to 102,832 TEUs. For the latest monthly totals, visit the Port of Long Beach's Web site.

(Considering this is our largest Pacific port for imports, I would love to hear from the "green shoot recovery" crowd how this indicates any type of recovery by Q3, since those goods would be arriving now....JG)
