Tehran erupted in unrest today as results for the Iranian presidential election pitting incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against leading reformist Mir-Hossein Mousavi and two other rivals were announced. Ahmadinejad won big amid record turnout and allegations of widespread voter fraud.

Enraged Mousavi supporters battled police for hours, and it remained unclear whether the unrest would stop anytime soon.

The amateur video posted above illustrates the drama unfolding in the Iranian capital.

The Iranian election is currently in turmoil. Both Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi are claiming to be ahead in the vote. Preliminary results from the presidential vote show Ahmadinejad leading; Iranian Election Commission chief Kamran Danesho held a press conference at 11:45 p.m. local time and announced that with some 20 percent of the votes counted, the president was leading with 3,462,548 votes (69.04 percent), while his main challenger, Mousavi, had 1, 425,678 (28.42 percent). Sources tell STRATFOR that these preliminary numbers pertain to the votes from the smaller towns and villages, where the president has considerable influence, as he has distributed a lot of cash to the poor.

However, Iran’s state-run Press TV is saying that only 10 million of 24 million votes, or around 42 percent of the vote, have been counted. At the same time, they are also claiming that 69 percent of the vote has been counted. Obviously the numbers are not adding up, and the agencies themselves appear to be in chaos.

Prior to the announcement of the results, Mousavi held a press conference in which he said he was the winner of the election. The opposition camp is greatly concerned about fraud, and STRATFOR has been told that Mousavi has vowed to resist any fraud, even if it entails taking to the streets. This means there is considerable risk of unrest should Ahmadinejad emerge as the winner. But so far there is no evidence that the government is mobilizing security forces to deal with any such eventuality.

The situation is being monitored carefully, as it is potentially explosive.

Just the latest "color" revolution. Orange in Ukrain, , green in Iran (official color of Islam, if you didn't catch the significance)

Let's hope this one makes it too. (I'm much rather the iranian people vote that fuck out, makes life VERY MUCH LESS MESSY for us).

This counter-revolution has been steaming for years. I hope it succeeds and that this sets the stage for a big political shift between the people of the US and the iranian people towards a significant reconciliation.

Things are getting better every day, now if we could just have a revolution against the Financial and Corperate Oligachs in THIS COUNTRY, we could start making some REAL progress.

The elected officials who are helped by color revolutions seem to know that another color revolution could just as easily displace THEM as it did their predecessors.

Iran is a prime candidate for an 'orange revolution' style political change.

Speaking with people I know who are either from or recently spent significant time in Georgia and the Ukraine, I was struck by how many of the primary supporters of these respective 'revolutions' were in the 16 to 22 age range at the time of the change.

Obviously at this age many people are young, naive, and energetic - prime fodder for manipulation.

Iran's demographic would seem to fit this category as well.

The cell phone system was shut down last night at about 12 midnight CST
