I think it was part of a scam, I'm just not sure how it was worked.

They seem to be saying things like the bonds were printed on high-quality paper.

I suspect that the Japanese guys who had the bonds think that they're real. That and high-quality paper doesn't make them real. The key point is this: The Fed has never issued bonds.

there are more than three hipothesis. I think some earlier reports told about US treasury bonds. I am sure they are going to decide, regardless of facts, that the bonds are fake. We probably never know.

A little crazy (a lot I would say) but it is about the same story, from a wild perspective:

Maybe it is not totally accurate, but may give some hints...

Re: US$ 134.5 billion seized at Italian Border

I know. I found this story of the 134 $$ in Le Monde, and I was surprised not to find it in main papers in the USA and elsewhere. Why such a silence in a note that would be also entertaining? So I thought there maybe something big hidden inside that story. I started googleing the 134 monies and found references of it only here in itulip, in a french blog, and in this weird website I posted the link. The only thing I found of interest there is the affirmation that that money belongs to papa Bush. The rest I don't find it that much credible. But look, as an hipothesis: if the money is not fake, who can have that ammount and not into the open? Only a mafiossi. Is it incredible that Bush sr. is a maffiosi with enough money power? What about some Japanesse? Or even the Vatican! So when I, for the very first time found this itulip forum, as a result of my search for what may be behind this bonds, I found nobody had a clue of it as an explanation in case, just in case, this is not fake bonds. I tried -unsuccesfully as I see now- to provide this crazy links that nevertheless my give a hint. I still think that so called "incredible" sometimes may give hints to what otherwise seems not to have an explanation. I still don't understand why a story in Le Monde, about 134 billion dlls. that were smuggled into Switzerland is no story for, say, the NYT? That is for me very telling. If the money is real, the NYT should have it in front page (IMO) if it is fake, it should be there also. I hope I may have answer your question about why I linked it here. Right?
                            Regards

In my opinion these are fake bonds.
The scam (I went through a similar one years ago) goes as that: One people find a bank which is in a disposition to take as a deposit the assets. As it is a deposit for which the bank is only responsible as a holder of same, no problem. Then they ask the bank to issue some kind of certificate that so and so has deposited in the institution such amount of assets.
With that "certificate" or letter or whatsoever, the scammers go to other bank, probably contact a "friendly" officer and ask a loan guarateed by the huge assets deposited.
Say a "modest" loan....20 million dollars (after all the guarantee is huge)
They probably need a "friendly" officer both in the first and also the second banks.
The scam I knew of involved people assuring they had property papers of land in the amazonia valued at 4 billion usd.
The first officer (I witnessed) politely told them they were not interested in holding the deposit.
                              End of story.
