Monbiot's realistic assessment, irrespective of his or the reader's politics, is that it's "Game Over."

Physical control and plundering of resources, via colonies, in time yielded to financial control and plundering of resources, via the banking system, both of which always supported, influenced and, ultimately, controlled the political and governmental system of the host country.

And yes, every major power in the history of the world has followed the same path, including America.

But "game over" doesn't mean we go gently into the good night. Nothing should terrify the world today more than former or soon-to-be-former global superpowers now becoming newly established, or soon-to-be-established banana republics with nukes.
