Detroit .. third world country?

Does anyone else think that Detroit is transitioning into a 3rd world country all of its own accord?

32% graduation rate.. 1/3 of its population in poverty.

Yikes .. what a scary place it must be to live.

Packs of wild dogs roam the streets, people in highland park use rotweilers as weapons to mug others, major parts of the city overgrown with brush, collapsed buildings everywhere.

The pigeons there are symbolic. All of them are asymmetrical mottled, missing patches of feathers, and paranoid and angry. When I moved to Seattle, I was shocked to find that all of the pigeons are sleek and clean, and I was able to walk close enough to them to tap them lightly on the back with an umbrella stick (I've since stopped using an umbrella; only newbies bother with them in Seattle).

Near Monterey on the coast in California. May have highest number of art galleries per capita in the state. Clint Eastwood was once its mayor. California Dreamin' ;)

There's a solution, open Detroit to the Chinese like what Singapore has done in recent years, they will be swarming all over the place in a couple of years like what happened in Singapore when a million Chinese migrants came over in just 8 years.

With the Chinese willing to work for free, yes, that's what they do in Singapore, they pay one year's wage just to get the permit to come, it will hit local people hard by driving down wages. But their sheer numbers will fill up empty buildings and pack hypermarts.

The only problem is how to prevent them getting out of Detroit and running all over the US. ;)

That's basically the story of Dearborn, an industrial suburb of Detroit. Once hollowed out after Detroit's economic collapse, it was in recent times re-settled by Arab immigrants, most of them Muslims. Dearborn is now is the most Muslim city in America.

To say that Detroit is "3rd world" is to insult the 3rd world. I grew up and lived in a 3rd world country (India). It was nowhere near as dangerous as Detroit. There are more murders in a year in Detroit than there have been in two decades in my home town in India (my town has twice as many people as Detroit) - which is remarkably civilized even by Western standards.

Before I came to the West, I associated poverty with not having a roof over one's head (or an inadequate one) and not getting enough to eat. It was only after I came to the West that I realised being poor meant having a TV, a home, a car and eating so much that one became obese.

On a more humorous note, here's the incomparable Jeremy Clarkson on Detroit (this was shot in the early 90s I believe).
