I was thinking the same thing while listening to the speeches today.

When GM starts to show a profit, the government will sell their stake to the banksters at a "profit" for the taxpayers. The banksters will borrow all the money from the government (in one way or another) to buy it. They will make out well.

GM will show a profit because they have a very strong owner. Imagine all the money they can now save on campaign contributions, bribes, and lobbying expenses. Not only that, but when GM starts making these itty-bitty cars, the government can offer a "Green rebate", "first time New GM Buyer Tax Credit", "treasury-backed financing', etc. etc. GM cars WILL sell.

So yes, I might buy GM stock. I foresee the United States becoming an export economy again one day. We will be exporting GM cars to the rich in Asia. A weak dollar will drive this. And, EJ says real industry can function under high inflation.

You can even put a little Obama icon on each exported car. They will sell like hotcakes!

You could buy Toyota, Tata or whoever it is who ends up buying the capital assets of GM when they are sold off abroad.

That was money used for liquidation, control and ownership change. Did you not see the smile on Larry Summers face?

No way. There is little speculative upside in a government run dinosaur, run by a government pushing unrealistic environmental and social agendas at the expense of the market and the common good.

They will use gm to push labor and liberal agendas and try to force demand from the supply side and no one will want their junk

Imagine how bad a pinto would have been if it were carters' pet design

The irony was that chrysler and gm were making the highest quality vehicles on earth over the last 5 years

I'm with you, Steve. A better question is, would you like to be forced to buy stock in GM? Hell no.

Would that be with or without a gun held to my head? I don't think I'd do it either way.

Government Motors. No thanks. That's not to say they might not see a stock jump here or there, but long term prospects being run by the government and unions are not good.

I still don't see how Ford isn't going to end up the same way eventually.

                          All depends.
I'm not going to run right out and buy it, we have to see how it is going to run.

Will it be run by engineers, and marketing people who are unleashed to design and build the best cars that people really want and have an open checkbook to finance the latest production technology? (won't hold my breath)

Will it be run by a bunch of short sighted finance guys, who treat the company as a finance company that builds cars? (current model), and are currently trying to meet the next quarters numbers? I don't think anyone at GM thought about what happens to our sales if gas goes to $4.00.

Will it be run by a bunch of smarty pants beureaucrats that produce cars that nobody wants, and makes sure the people on their side are well taken care of? (unions if the dems are in, preffered vendors who have powerful lobbies either party) Who can afford a 40K chevy volt? Or will we have the 40K chevy volt with a 20k gvt rebate plan? Are we going to build the gm smart-car? A car with no carrying capacity, and gets worse milage than my 1995 mazda 323 wagon, that I can put a ton of stuff into, and gets 40 mpg on the highway? Once the gvt can no longer blame the former leadership for mis-management do you think they will lay off 10k of union workers? Even though it would be in the company's best interests. Very doubtful.

You know the thing about america is that were not so good at building low cost quality products. We are good at innovation. The, tranistor, cell phone, i-c chip, mass produced auto, nuclear power, ground breaking drugs were invented here. It will be a very tough row to hoe if gm is now going to make small cars that will be "generic" small cars that compete with the Japanese, and Korean auto makers. Additionally there are Indian, Chinesese cars starting to come on line too. The small, reliable, fuel efficient car is going to be a race down to the commodity pricing level.

One thing the gvt is not really good at is taking chances, and innovation. Most beurocrats are fearful of losing their phoney-baloney jobs, and do not rock the boat. Meeting plan keeps your job, taking a risk that could "blow-up" means you lose your job.

Ok, looks like scenario 3 with a perp walk of auto execs in front of congress explaining why they had to close dealerships. Just 24 hours after the filing, the smarty pants are micro-managing the deal.

Also forgot about the scenario of gvt g-man. where the non-us companies are taken out through, the legislataition and judicial decisions and gvt motors access to free money. Watch out Ford, Toyota, Honda ...
