Bridgetwater, Mass - a blue collar town on the South Shore.

A selectman was punched in the face at a local bar early Friday after a verbal dispute with a firefighter.

While police did not identify the assailant, Flynn, contacted Friday, said it was a firefighter.

“I’m not mad at (the firefighter), but it’s fair to say I am fairly disappointed because I am concerned about how one person’s actions, clouded by his emotions, may reflect on the character of his department.”

Earlier this week, selectmen released a proposal that could result in the layoffs of eight firefighters.

Police say Selectman Christopher T. Flynn, 26, was punched by another patron, who was not arrested, while at Barrett’s Ale House about 12:15 a.m.

“There was a verbal exchange between the two parties,” said Police Lt. Christopher Delmonte. Flynn did not seek medical attention, Delmonte said.

According to the police report, McGillis told police that, “He walked over and asked Flynn why he was screwing with (McGillis’) brother firefighters and police.”

McGillis also told police that Flynn had used an expletive and put a hand on McGillis’ shoulder, causing McGillis to feel threatened and punch Flynn once in the face, according to the report.

McGillis denied making any death threat, according to the report.

In an interview, Flynn said he didn’t swear at McGillis and didn’t put a hand on McGillis.

This was the big story on all of the local news channels tonight. The fireman spoke to the media today and stated his case. Make no mistake, this was definitely about emotions running high over a budget crisis.

I have a daughter who lives in notorious Vallejo, California. Police and Firemen consume 80% of the city's budget. An ongoing, never-ending struggle to lower this amount has apparently resulted in a "blue flu" response to misdemeanor and smaller felonies. She tells me most people don't expect any action on car and house break-ins. They would welcome a simple punch in the nose, if that was an alternative.

Yes, but this wouldn't have happened if the one guy wasn't a fireman and the other a selectman. They weren't fighting over a woman or a dart game and in fact didn't know each other before that first conversation.

When was the last time you heard about an elected official being punched in a bar? Selectman Flynn isn't the first one to hang out in a bar after work.
