BTW, this is the exact argument that comes up repeatedly in the GCC every time there is a downturn...some idiot Finance Minister blames the problems on Philippino maids ripping off the economy because they send their savings home to the family. As you can probably tell, I think it's a BS argument in the GCC and I think it's most probably a BS argument in California also. But I would be happy to be proved wrong on the latter. You might start by showing us how much more the California agriculture industry could contribute to the state economy without the cheap labour...

As to the Republicans moving to the "Far-Right": you've got to be kidding - or politically blind.
The Republicans lost power because they became the very same political hacks and whores that they managed to throw out back in 1994.

Other than his two appointments to the Supreme Court I can't find a lot of difference between Bush and the other huge failure of a president from Texas: Lyndon Baines Johnson. And he couldn't spell the word "conservative".

The US constitution (in view of the history before it, declaration of independence, ect) was and is the best case so far of natural law (e.g., life and liberty) being put forth as an "ideal" in the government
positive law put forth in an attempt to express and codify elements of natural law.

otoh - the House of rep is closest to the people and "represents the people" -
law which puts braoad boundaries around and limits the power of democracy for the benefit of the individual, and law directs representation of the individual in the form of gov

One of the tricks governments can use to dupe people into voting themselves poorer is to cut the few things that actually benefit them and are visible, like trash pickup or emergency services. Keep the slush funds, expense accounts, pay raises, sweetheat deals, public-sector perks, no-bid contracts, etc. but cut the things people actually want. Then go back to the taxpayers and say "See what you did? You greedy taxpayer bastards are ruining the state- we need higher taxes!"

If it was my kid I would do everything I could to get them the transplant. I would scream and cry and fight it as best I could. I would do anything. I am sure I would think the government was evil.. etc, etc. They are supposed to pay to keep my kid alive... because...

However, the reality is this:

People get sick and they die.
Health care costs money.
Life is not fair.

The state is SUPPOSED to think beyond the individual. They are supposed to take limited resources ($$$) and use it for maximum benefit to society. 1.5 million dollars can be used to save many lives. Hell, you can buy 100,000 courses of antibiotics for that.

Yeah, health care costs money and one poor kid should die; bc his family has no money..... MEANWHILE, bankers rob the country blind, in-debt it beyond belief and steal from the poor via an inflation tax and its "inevitable and needed to save our country".....

All of that and yes i agree "life is not fair"....

I think healthcare is one of the basic necessities of life... I would not be against universal health care for everyone; money better spent on the average individual than the robber bankers....

Indeed all healthcare systems need to ration. But I'd like to see rationing according to medical necessity and not solely according to who has the best health insurance.

Elderly folk get new hips / knees & massively expensive end of life care from lifelong insurance policies that are now bankrupting the companies that pay their insurance premiums for their retirees.

Plus they get free / cheap prescription drugs courtesy of the government.

And poor / lower middle class kids die, never having had a decent shot at life simply because their parents don't work for an employer with decent insurance coverage.

Oh, and all the managers in the healthcare-industrial complex get rich.

I still maintain that California's number one problem is that they've spent 30+years paying for everything with bonds, and now the interest payments are eating them up. It's their way of avoiding reality. Don't blame the politicians ... the electorate are up to their eyes in it too, as they have spent 30+ years ignoring the reality.

But, just like Weimar Germany there will always be those who look for easy scapegoats. "First they came for the Mexicans ...."
