Somali pirates guided by London intelligence team, report says

The Somali pirates attacking shipping in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean are directed to their targets by a "consultant" team in London, according to a European military intelligence document obtained by a Spanish radio station.

The document, obtained by Cadena SER radio, says the team and the pirates remain in contact by satellite telephone.

It says that pirate groups have "well-placed informers" in London who are in regular contact with control centres in Somalia where decisions on which vessels to attack are made. These London-based "consultants" help the pirates select targets, providing information on the ships' cargoes and courses.

In at least one case the pirates have remained in contact with their London informants from the hijacked ship, according to one targeted shipping company.

The national flag of a ship is also taken into account when choosing a target, with British vessels being increasingly avoided, according to the report. It was not clear whether this was because pirates did not want to draw the attention of British police to their information sources in London.

European countries have set up Operation Atalanta to co-ordinate their military efforts in the area.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The president's new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air.

John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

Cant find the research paper but saw it quoted several years ago where high altitude very fine particulate dispersion could be done, to cool the earth. same as vulcanism dust, or the time after 9/11 where they claim that temperature rose a degree or two when no jets were in the sky.

The cost of this is much much less than the cost of not using fossil fuels or carbon sequesation (did i spell that ok?) etc.

So do I.

My thought is that if the modification to albedo only persists as long as it is actively maintained by humans, it can probably be modulated on a time scale much shorter than the natural response time of the climate. That would mean we wouldn't actually have to be able to predict the response of the climate very far in advance, but rather do something like feedback control in real time to keep the climate within a desired band, based only upon current measured data. So, if we can turn the cooling effect on and off like a switch, there's a good chance we can deal with the chaotic nature of the climate (one category of unintended consequence) simply because whatever surprises we encounter as a result of our meddling, we can adjust our manipulation faster than they manifest.

Of course, there's the potential that whatever we do to manipulate the planet's albedo will have unintended side-effects (e.g. chemical pollution, etc.). There's also the issue that if our control over the albedo was ever interrupted, we might fry very quickly.

... And I freely admit that my inexpert speculation that we could manipulate things quickly enough to stay ahead of the earth's response is a pretty shaky basis upon which to turn our planet into a science experiment. But the point of my post wasn't that this was a good idea -- only that I think this is what we'll be driven to, given human nature and the nature of the problem.

Global Dimming vs. Global Warming

Global Dimming has been known about for last 10 years, and has already reduced solar energy reaching the surface of the Earth by 25% (between 1955 to 1997). If it wasn't for this, our goose would have been cooked long ago.

Now we don't have enough problems already, so we're going to cause another problem so this new problem counteracts the problems we previously created over the last 300 years???

Haven't these people learned that two wrongs don't make a right?

George W. Bush's "Do Nothing & Deny" policy may, in the end be better that Obama's "Goody Two-Shoes let's try to fix it quick & easy" meddling.

It is the unintended consequences of providing a powerful central authority yet one more way to manipulate our world.

Hmm so one is wearing a tinfoil hat if you believe that MI6 or some other government agencies are the most likely candidate to have access to shipping route information, deck plans etc and have a possible motive for passing on this information to "terrorist groups or pirates etc.." for what ever agenda?


On the other hand believing there is a highly organised "fifth column" of Muslims, crime syndicate or whatever, using satellite phones, accessing the necessary agencies /companies which retain records of shipping routes, deck plans etc. and can transmit live data on the fly where necessary, and has done so up till now, unnoticed by British security services, is the only type of position "allowed", which could be construed as sane and rational?

I suppose both are possible but I personally think MI6 et al are far more likely candidates, and feel free to name call and ask me mind numbing questions as to my position on any of the myriad of "conspiracies" you can think of.
