  • Election Daze

This is a great day for political quotes from the past. Here's my entry:

"It matters not one iota what political party is in power or what President holds the reins of power.

"We are not politicians or public thinkers; we are the rich, we own America, we got it. God knows how, but we intend to keep it if we can by throwing all the tremendous weight of our support, our influence, our money, our political connections, our purchased senators, our hungry congressmen, our public-speaking demagogues into the scale against any legislature, any political platform, any presidential campaign that threatens the integrity of our estate."

Frederick Townsend Martin, self-described member and defender of the 'idle rich', writing at the turn of the century.

Perhaps in its frankness. That's been fixed It was the increasingly hostile and aware reaction to the blatantly idle rich that helped launch the Carnegie and Rockefeller charitable public relations machine. A fascinating period of American history in power and control.

you know, all you guys and your pessimism, thinking that the president doesn't make a difference. Were the 1990s' different than the 2000s? Has there been a difference between Jack Welch and Jeffrey Immelt? What about when Steve Jobs left Apple?

It matters, it matters a lot.

It's like the quarterback in football. Commentators say the position is the most overrated because it gets the most press and it the most visible. I say quite the opposite. The quarterback position is underrated - as is the President, whether it be of the USA or a corporation.

Think itulip would be what it is without EJ as it's president?

You're right, I concede. Every 4 years the executive spot of the most powerful country on the planet is thrown up for grabs. If white trash from Arkansas, a B actor from your neck of the woods, or a moronic frat boy from 'Texas' gets the most votes, he decides policy for the next four or eight years.

          What a country!
