  • Rudimentary Knowledge We Should All Have

We live in a unique time in human history. Most of the things we need in life are provided to us through the power of industry. Long gone are the days in which people had to develop a strong suit of skills covering a wide variety of activities, like growing your own food or providing your own fuels. While it is a miraculous feat that modern humans have been able to reduce these once difficult day-to-day tasks into simple matters of everyday convenience, it has also rendered us less dynamic individuals with a distinct lack of appreciation for the monumental powers of modern ingenuity. That is why I think we owe it to ourselves to try to learn as much as we possibly can about the world and our place in it.

I will provide a list of three topics everyone should be familiar with to better understand the world we live in and to be more self-sufficient. Please provide three topics you feel everyone should be familiar with if you post in this thread.

    1. A basic understanding of electronics. http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~elec201/...asic_elec.html

    2. The ability to garden. http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-start-a-garden.htm

    3. A basic understanding of mechanics. http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~elec201/...asic_mech.html

And the corollary, if you cannot add these to your personal repertoire, makes friends with those that do and have something to trade in return.

Hmmm. Almost all of my reading is of an esoteric nature. I had peviously recommended to you Money And The Meaning of life. It's a very easy read. Great beginning and end. On this forum, Rajiv, to my great joy, and good fortune had posted:

          http://www.itulip.com/forums/showpos...3&postcount=19

He speaks so simple and clearly. Very easy to understand what he is saying, as long as you don't try to "figure it out."

In an earlier thread GRG55 recommended Mans Search For The Meaning Of Life. Not the same flavor as some of the things I read. Although the title would suggest so. It is a good book, but sad. If you ever want to "step out" a little bit, both are a good way to start.
