    Re: Tied to the Mast

    Alger,

Don't forget both tactics and strategy.

For my personal case, I view the dollar as the greatest risk of all.

Thus anything and everything in dollars is at risk from the performance of the greenback.

Thus GRG55's statement that cash is an investment position is absolutely correct, but should read that cash is an investment position in the US dollar, US interest rate, and US bank stability - this last one depending on the amount of cash (i.e. over $100K).

You could invest in another cash currency, with a different country's interest rate and bank stability.

Also as has been talked about before: there are also investments in cash flow. Businesses which are least likely to be affected by a reduction in overall wealth/liquidity and which generate positive cash are another way to invest to protect assets. This is also an avenue I am actively exploring.

Rydex sponsors a series of currency ETFs that trade on the NYSE. These include denominations in Swiss Franc (FXF), Euro (FXE), Pound, Loonie, Yen, Peso, and even the Swedish Krona, in case you have a preference for tall blondes. These are a convenient and relatively inexpensive way to swap US$ into another currency.
