  • Secure email

Friends, I had a scare today where all of my network accounts, including FaceBook and three seperate web mail accounts were compromised simultaneously. I damn near stroked out and spent hours locking down my primary accounts. I had to kill an email address I've held since 1996 that served as my primary Internet identity and that will cause much headache and some expense. The remaining accounts for banking and such seem secure, but I went ahead and changed the credentials anyway.

I expect I will go dark on the Internet for a while until I figure out some reasonable way to ensure that no one can represent themselves as me and compromise me again. I use two factor authentication at my office including RSA SecurID keyfob and an ActivIDentity token. I'm wondering if there are similar approaches I can use to better secure my personal and small business email accounts. I willing to spend what it takes to enhance security and would appreciate hearing your experiences and recommendations.

    Best,
    Woodsman

    Re: Secure email

unless you have specific reasons to host email yourself, you may want to consider google apps. Security is very complicated; why not outsource it for cheap?

It is a reminder to us all: Change passwords frequently. Do not use the same passwords across different sites/accounts. Store your passwords securely (macs have a keystore, windows/linux can use "KeePass Password Safe")

      Re: Secure email

Both Gmail and Lastpass can be set up to use google authenticator for two factor authentication. Lastpass has also come out with notifications if your email is found listed on a publicly leaked email list.

use different passwords for different accounts and make a hard copy to refer to. I don't trust electronic password keepers.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

For the most secure password on any given site, always go with the most characters allowed and the craziest combination of characters. Alpha-numeric, symbols, etc and without any duplicates.
