  • Pfizer Inc. going out of business this afternoon, that's for sure

Pfizer has done such a good job creating healthy cows here in the US that they've just announced they're going to be closing up shop. Seems the Surgeon General once again was full of crap and apparently fast food, sugar water, hormones, pollution, being overweight, smoking and stress are all very healthy things to be doing to yourself. With this said Pfizer realizes the jig is up and will be cashing out whatever assets are left this afternoon.

Richard Baggard, an officer for Pfizer stated as he was boxing up his personnal belongings from his desk, "Pfizer always looked after the sick and the unfortunate, we've done such a good job of this that we're going out of business. Everyone is healthy and will be living to be 150 thanks to Pfizer."

Apparently everyone has been wrong about Pirate Capitalism as well and it really does look out for the betterment of society. Certainly this chart says everything.

Hopefully everyone believes this and is kind enough to sell me their shares at about $23.00 before I start to hype the crap out of this POS stock. 4.9% Dividend yields are hard to come by. Thanks.

Tet, Pfizer has some significant issues ongoing. Many blockbuster drugs coming off patent without a sweet pipeline to fill the gaps. One of the reasons Merck has significantly boomed in share price appreciation is their pipeline is so strong, along with their HPV vaccinations which are now becoming mandatory for all girls 9-26 years old. Even though MRK has almost doubled in the past 2 years, it's future earnings growth looks a lot more solid than PFE. I would not be surprised if MRK has a higher market cap than PFE within 2-3 years (currently $56 billion apart).

I still like the other side of the market - instead of the health care sector, give me the vice sector. Tobacco especially, but gambling and alcohol looks good too. I stated it on the other thread but I re-upped some Altria (MO) at 65.11/share (end of day 7/31 = 66.47). 4.2% yield is second only to PFE and C in the Dow 30.

Incidentally Tet the more I read and see, the more I'm inclined to tilt towards blue chip dividend multinational companies. I think reading that Siegel article yesterday got me back on a more tempered bullish outlook (or at least capital protection through owning stocks). What do you think?

Only recently coming around to this line of thinking myself, I still like some of these Nifty NASDAQ stocks that don't pay much dividend and are nothing but promises. Multi-nationals do get to play in a multitude of currencies and recognize a multitude of bubbles. Pfizer is paying out close to 5%, I would imagine they'd best comment on their intentions in order to get a feel for which way this stock goes. All fun stuff, I don't think you can get hurt very badly picking up PFE here.

It's one of those situations where you look at it and think... well, they've grown through M&A for 50+ years, do you have faith they will do it again?

If I knew more about upper management and had confidence in them, I might be more inclined. I do think there is some definite value just in terms of current earnings and cash positions.

I just can't help but compare PFE to MRK. Two years ago MRK was dropping like a fly on lawsuits from Vioxx which were overblown; and now with wins in many cases and a very strong pipeline MRK has made a strong recovery. PFE - has basically dropped due to a graying of their product lines. No real big news just a slow erosion of future earnings.

Now with 22b in cash, you would think they could definitely be active in M&A's and buy a better pipeline. If I had confidence in the management team I would certainly be buying. I will say that I'll keep an eye on it, and certainly PFE is in a strong position to improve their fortunes, I'm just not seeing it right now.

        best of luck.

        edit: an interesting read:
