Unemployment Benefits Denied!Over A Million Families Destroyed!

They did it! The government of your nation did it! They just turned their backs on over a million people on unemployment and denied the extensions! Congress, in the most nefarious and pernicious move seen since “post economic collapse period,” has walked away, went home for the weekend and did not extend unemployment benefits to over a million America families.

One Senator from Kentucky was allowed to block the unemployment benefits and put over a million families in complete and utter jeopardy by cutting off the only income these families have to pay their bills. Jim Bunning the junior Senator from The Blue Grass State just decided to play politics with people’s survival and crushed the unemployed by making a national debt argument on the backs of over a million families. In the most coldhearted fashion, this venal man sold his soul to ideology and crushed under his foot the desperate millions of people who can not find a job due to no fault of their own.

The dysfunction of this government is now in full force and on display for every American to see. Those of us with a job who don’t speak out and do something, deserve to one day be in our fellow American’s shoes. Our government is completely out of control and with this latest failure has become the single biggest threat to the survival of the American family. To allow one politician from some small state to block extended unemployment for over a million people and their families goes beyond anything acceptable.

This is a direct assault on people’s ability to survive and this congress has now become a clear and present danger, not only to the millions of people they just harmed, but the rest of us as well. All you have to do is turn on your TV and see the civil unrest in Greece to know not just third world nations experience civil unrest. The government in Greece just cut off a lot of services and you see what happened there.

I, for one, don’t need or want to see this kind of thing in the streets of America. However, this is only the first million people the congress has cut off, there are millions more after them. These people who are unemployed and cut off are the people from the beginning of the economic collapse that lost their jobs. There are millions after them and what are the streets of America going to look like when these people hit skid row?

The government and Wall Street have wiped out ten million jobs and now won’t even float the people on unemployment who have nowhere to go! This is beyond a travesty; this is a government who is putting us all at risk with this incompetence and apathy.

People do you understand? One million, two hundred thousand individuals with at least 2 or 3 other family members in their homes, have no ability to pay their bills now. This affects probably around four million human beings. They are not from some third world nation on the other side of the planet. They are our neighbors, friends and family! No excuses; these people can not wait until some election in November to vote these bums out. Something has to be done this weekend!

My God what kind of country have we become? Our government is destroying millions of people. Are we just going to turn our backs because we still have a job? Where and what is the soul of this nation? I want an answer to that question now!

Senate Democrats will seek a yearlong extension of unemployment insurance benefits on Monday.

Federal unemployment benefits expire on Sunday, since Republican Senator Jim Bunning blocked the passage of a 30-day extension of benefits on Thursday in the Senate.
But it certainly looks like there will be a week or two's interruption in the processing of the unemployment checks -- depending on when the bills get through. Could be devastating when you are living unemployment check to unemployment check.

Yes, it will be really hard on many many people, but the senate did this, not just one senator. Just two weeks after passing paygo they ignore it in this legislation:eek:

Didn't these people get 99 weeks of unemployment compensation?

the author of this piece is, IMO, a sentimental, pandering idiot. the gov destroys families by their proactive programs, incentives, regs, and NOT b/c it fails to subsidize inactivity idefinitely

Let's see, pay people not to work, pay they're COBRA, and allow them to sit in their own w/o paying their mortgage, and promise not to foreclose.

If folks can't see something very wrong with this picture, we are all in a lot of trouble ....

Send every family (employed and unemployed) the same check. That would be much fairer.

With unemployment running more than 30% for those at the lowest end of the income scale, I question the wisdom of simply cutting off the poorest and most desperate segment of society, particularly when some may turn to more violent means to get what they need to survive. What the unemployed need more than anything else is jobs. In addition, those jobs need to pay a living wage otherwise they will be right back on the dole for things like healthcare and food stamps (i.e. you and I wind up paying anyway for the "savings" of low wages for places like WalMart's with our tax dollars).

From a cost perspective, unemployment benefits are a relatively small expense (something like around $40B annually for the entire U.S. if I remember correctly). Of course, there is the little matter of the $25 trillion in bailouts and backstops to the Wall Street crowd so they can have another blowout year in bonuses (> $100 billion in 2009 thanks to your tax dollars), "Lord" Blankfein can continue doing God's work, and a disgraced Ken Lewis can retire with a paltry $73M payout.

The fact is that the wealth of our nation has gone to preserve the wealth of a few well connected elites who otherwise would likely be penniless and currently standing in the unemployment line with all the other schmucks who are out of a job. We have a welfare state alright every bit as insidious as the one created by the Johnson administration back in the 1960's. However, ours is turned upside down: "socialism for the rich and well connected."

Just keep in mind that most of those folks who are getting benefits would likely still be working had it not been for the greed and reckless disregard for the law of a few really bad apples.

A nice synopsis on this from Mother Jones:

GOP to the Unemployed: Drop Dead (You Bums)

Of course, let's not blame all this on the Republicans. Both parties are full of incompetent cretins. With the Democrats unable to claim the high ground since most seem hell bent on serving their Wall Street overlords, the Republicans suddenly seem to really care about deficits, but only after having doubled the national debt under Bush II. This is political grandstanding at its worst. When the people arrive in DC with the pitchforks and torches, maybe, just maybe, these people might actually get a clue.

It would appear that under certain circumstances, and only in certain States, one could extend benefits for as long as 59 weeks.

                  http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/unempl...employment.htm

Up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits, starting after the 26 weeks of standard benefits may be available to eligible unemployed workers during periods of high unemployment.

                  http://www.edd.ca.gov/unemployment/E...nformation.htm

The November 2008 legislation also included a second extension of up to 13 weeks for high unemployment states, which includes California. Eligible workers will receive a total of up to 33 weeks of extended benefits. New legislation enacted on February 17, 2009, extends the last date a federal extension claim can be filed and paid.

Hard to imagine what goes through someones mind when they have been receiving benefits for so long. At what point do they decide to "settle" on something.

                      Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)

EUC was expanded by Congress and the President effective November 8, 2009. We updated the information below to reflect changes.

                      Eligibility

What is emergency unemployment compensation (EUC)?

EUC is a federal emergency extension that provides up to 53 additional weeks of unemployment benefits.

The EUC program has four tiers.
                      • Tier 1 -
We can pay up to 20 weeks of tier 1 benefits.
                      • Tier 2 -
We can pay up to another 13 weeks of benefits. We will send you a Statement of Wages and Hours if you qualify for these additional weeks. You do not need to apply or contact us to receive these additional weeks.

Effective 11/8/2009, tier 2 was expanded by one week. We can now pay up to 14 weeks of benefits after you run out of tier 1 benefits. We will automatically add up to one more week of benefits to your tier 2 benefits if you already been set up for tier 2.
                      • Tier 3 -
Effective 11/8/2009, we can pay up to another 13 weeks of benefits. We will send you a Statement of Wages and Hours if you qualify for these additional weeks. You do not need to apply or contact us to receive these additional weeks.
                      • Tier 4 -
Effective 11/8/2009, we can pay up to another 6 weeks of benefits. We will send you a Statement of Wages and Hours if you qualify for these additional weeks. You do not need to apply or contact us to receive these additional weeks.
                      Do I qualify for EUC?

You may qualify for Washington EUC if:
                      • You are not eligible for a regular claim in any state (including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia) or receiving unemployment benefits from Canada; and
                      • You have a valid Washington claim that began on or after May 7, 2006; and
                      • The benefit year on the claim has ended or you received all of the benefits.

                      Application

How do I apply for EUC?

We will mail a paper EUC application to you before you run out of regular unemployment benefits. If you do not receive an application by the time you run out of regular benefits, you can get one from your local WorkSource office or by calling the EUC Unit at 1-877-558-8509.

You could get to social security age. I think after 90 or so weeks I would take the first job I could. Then wait till age 62 and retire.

November 8, 2009. This program expired in 3 months? The Senator only blocked a 30 day extension. Seems a bit silly. Are the rest of the programs as tenuous? or do they all expire monthly?

But then what to do when the Social Security check can no longer cover the rent and food?

Every form of retirement or pension plan we have will have to take a major hit, paying out in real value far less than promised.
