trivial by what's going on elsewhere but considering the distance from the source, impressive nevertheless. . ..

Without the early warnings, deaths in Crescent City harbor seems inevitable.

    Damage reports:

Crescent City: 30 boats sunk, docks destroyed. No business possible out of harbor.

Santa Cruz: 18 boats sunk. $17M in est. dock damage.

    5,000 miles from the epicenter.

It was remarkable how benign the water appeared. Without boats and docks present, you'd never know anything was happening at this distance from the catastrophe.

"Crescent City: 30 boats sunk, docks destroyed. No business possible out of harbor.

Santa Cruz: + 18 boats sunk. $17M in est. dock damage. "
....................48 boat owners with 10 hours to prepare who might have decided to let insurance pick up the tab.

I wonder if many of these boats weren't just wasting away while taking up valuable slip space.

Here's what they were supposed to be doing...

      http://thegazette.com/2011/03/11/ced...ami-in-hawaii/

"Cedar Rapids native Walter H. Furman II, who lives on Hawaii’s Big Island, set out to sea to ride out the tsunami on a friend’s boat.
Via Facebook postings, he explained it’s safer to get the boats out of the harbors and into open waters, where the waves will go under them."

I found this poignant particularly in this regard:

      http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110313/...ake_pacific_56

"the family of a 25-year-old Oregon man combed the beach looking for signs of him. Authorities say Dustin Weber was swept away as he and two friends photographed the waves.

"He just didn't respect the ocean and didn't understand the tsunami," his father, Jon Weber, said. "The (first surge) hit about 7:30. It was the second wave that hit at 9:30 that got him."

The Great Highway in SF was closed due to the size of the crowds down at the beach waiting to see the tsunami.
