I understand that 25 years ago the tallest building was the British Colonial (brick, about 8 stories) in the Bund... is that right?
My time there was mainly at La Meridian and the Jin Jiang Tower...

You're right. But I'm not looking how modern or impressive the city is - what I am seeing is the population density - high density can give rise to a consumer economy - which means $$$$.
I estimate that Shanghai population exceeds 30 million. The official population on paper is only 19 million - which is an impossible figure based on city size and density as compared to other cities.
If you add in other nearby cities like Nanjing, Kunshan, Wuxi, Suzhou, Ningbo, Hangzhou that are accessible within 1 hour commute (by fast rail), the total urban population may well exceed 80 million people, the population of Germany, with a mixed economy (not just manufacturing), but also finance, ports, tourism, retail and services.
These are 80 million educated people with high school or college education, with jobs, with high speed band Internet, not living in slumps or working on the fields and living in a place safe enough for women to walk on the city streets past midnight. Having 80 million people within commute distance is unprecedented in mankind history.
Nanjing city, 1 hr by fast rail from Shanghai, another 7-8 million urban dwellers:

Hangzhou city, also 1 hr from Shanghai, another 5 million urban dwellers.

A city can generate a lot of "jobs". Contractors, plumbers, restaurant waiter, waitresses, brokers, janitors, repairmen of all sorts, all the usual stuff you can find in any city.Last edited by touchring; January 11, 2011, 04:34 AM.

In that case, then the price must collapse. What is important is they are built in the first place. A bubble doesn't reverse the fact that urbanization is good for economic growth.

To the European, a tour along the beaches of Thailand maybe a relaxing holiday, to the Chinese, holiday aside, they maybe watching for business opportunities, to setup a factory to tap into low cost labor, or setup a shop selling made in China "Thai souvenirs" to tourists.Last edited by touchring; January 12, 2011, 01:54 AM.

"Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, and the waving wheat can sure smell sweet when the wind comes right behind the rain...." ( from the Broadway musical, Oklahoma, released in 1954 )
I don't want to be a divergent-thinker just to be a divergent-thinker, because I truly am amazed at what China has accomplished in recent years.... But "Live free or die," is my motto. Everyone needs the freedom to be eccentric and to just have and OWN land.
I like the "harmoneous orchestra" vision of China, but I like open spaces and land. I like to OWN something, especially land or gold or oil. I don't understand why that is, but it is...... This is part of freedom, and it is why I live in Canada or America..... Nevertheless, I do admire China.
Thank you for the great pictures. "Success speaks for itself," is an old saying, but how does China treat eccentrics and those with divergent or contrary-views? Are there investigative reporters in the Chinese newspapers or Chinese media?
How are they treated by their government?

China is still at the early stage. If you want to know about freedom, you should check Singapore first.
Brainwashing is a very powerful communist political tool, if you haven't experienced it, you won't understand it.
Like in communist China, brainwashing in Singapore starts from birth. From preschool, kids are opposed to government propaganda, school lessons are crafted to glorify and enforce the legitimacy of the party and to condemn the fallen political opponents. The party is involved in all neighborhood activities, not just political but also recreational and even sports events. All these measures can legitimize autocracy in the eyes of the populace.
For people born in such an environment, freedom is worthless.Last edited by touchring; January 19, 2011, 12:07 PM.
